Where does the engine smoothness come from?

Maybe this is something I'm imagining, I'll let yall tell me that. But when an older GM engine is running very well, it seems to be very smooth. Almost as though you're in a vehicle and the engine isn't running. But it is. I've noticed this seems to be even more apparent in with the TBI engines...

    I've come here to complain!

Yeah I do the same thing. It's really for the best, because if you don't do all that extra work, the antique truck is that much closer to falling apart. It's really preventative maintenance.

    I've come here to complain!

Yeah but damned if I didn't have a streak going. I used to have to do everything twice, didn't really matter what vehicle it was on. Slowly got better as the years went by, but the antique truck is giving me grief. LOL!

    I've come here to complain!

It doesn't matter what you do, if the lights are on the chime is on. Truck can be running. But I may as well use this thread to ask another question: What are all the different chimes you can get? In another thread, someone mentioned that some of the old cadillac door chimes sounded pretty...

I believe they will only plug in one way.

    I've come here to complain!

Haha yeah I've noticed that about these old trucks. Sometimes they'll fix themselves. Maybe it happens on a lot of vehicles but usually I'm not that lucky. I did fix the radio today though. Apparently it was a blown fuse. Now just fix the door chime, gauges, and power window and I'll be back...

TBI backfire and dies at idle

Haven't checked the timing yet, but about 8 years ago I had the truck tuned up by a good mechanic and he set the timing. So I'm curious... what causes it to lose that setting? Why would the timing be off, without someone messing with the distributor? And if it does turn out to be the timing...

    I've come here to complain!

For that to be the case, all those things would have to be working to begin with. Then I'd have come along, broke everything, and considered it a job well done. At least the government you describe would start with something that needs to be fixed. So a big improvement over what we have now...

    I've come here to complain!

Argh!! My repairs have failed! I just got the truck all fixed up, after it basically sat for 2 years without me touching it. Did a round of repairs to get everything back in working order, and some of the repairs died: 1. Fixed the driver's side power window - Next day it's dead again 2...

TBI backfire and dies at idle

Thanks I downloaded all the manuals from a guy on another forum. Hopefully you're talking about the same manual. I'll just look for the flow chart in the drivability part of the manual. I have a timing light and the right distributor wrench so I can check those pretty easily. I have a digital...

TBI backfire and dies at idle

I know how to check timing and the plug wires, but how do you test the fuel pressure, IAC, EGR, and CTS for free? I'll certainly do all that.

TBI backfire and dies at idle

I have the TBI 350 in my 87 R10 truck. It likes to die at idle, and makes a loud popping noise too, which I'm guessing is backfire. At first I thought it was bad gas because it sat for about 6 months without starting, but I put Stabil in it so that wouldn't happen. I also ran that tank out, and...

What's the best way to drain the gas tank?

You mean you don't have to get gasoline in your mouth? Awesome! Joking aside I usually just use a small clear hose like a straw and then stop when I see it flowing. It will do the job to get the gas moving. I just need a way to get the tube into the tank.

What's the best way to drain the gas tank?

Well it's an 87 model, I don't know if that matters. Maybe they started putting in some kind of thief block later on. Or maybe I'm doing it wrong and I just need to try harder. Have you guys used siphon hoses on the fuel filler neck successfully?

What's the best way to drain the gas tank?

Got a pic of the fuel pump? I'm imagining using a stock fuel pump apparatus so that the lines are easy to hook up

What breed of cat is that? There's a cat that roams my neighborhood that looks exactly like it.

What's the best way to drain the gas tank?

I have the dual tank truck, (87 5.7L 2wd) and one of the fuel pumps died last year. Of course it croaked with a full tank of gas. I left it in there and didn't do anything about it, because I wasn't really in the mood to work on the truck at the time. But now it's time to drop the tank and fix...

What is this thing, and other questions

Looks like that will work if it's the same size. There's very little wiggle room, so it's gotta be real close. You might have to trim off those folded over pieces that appear to be keeping it bent. But if it works out, that's a very good find. I just ended up soldering everything, which does...

    Door pocket needed

Hi I'm looking for one of those door pockets that has the flap at the top. For my 87 truck. I only need one, and it can be old and crusty and falling apart. It can be ran over a few times. Doesn't matter as long as it's basically all still there. I'm going to use it as a pattern to make new...

What is this thing, and other questions

Thank you Firetruck84! I'll go install it now. May as well continue this thread - Here is my problem with the new window felt. As you can see, when the window is rolled all the way up, there's a gap in the top left hand corner. I don't want water coming in there and I can do without any extra...

What is this thing, and other questions

Is it possible the clip has something to do with the window channel weather stripping? I think they call it a "window sweep". It's the felt channel that the driver/passenger windows slide in. I have a gap at the top I'm trying to seal up, but the channel is pretty deep. Thought maybe this...

    How to refurbish hood ornament?

Some guy on another site claimed to have taken his apart and put a pic of his bare butt in there, back in high school. If I can manage to get the thing apart without destroying it, I may be able to fix it myself somehow. Even if my chevy logo isn't exactly the same as OEM

    How To Refurbish Your Dashpad

Here's my experience with the aftermarket dashes - 1. That giant blob of uerethane is terrible. It's a bad idea that they never should have developed and sold. It's very heavy, and it sags in places it's supposed to be straight. 2. Whatever dash you end up ordering, make sure it has a metal...

What is this thing, and other questions

What is this rusty bracket, with the body clip attached? As I was redoing my interior, I somehow came across this odd looking body clip. My next question is about the crimped electrical connector. It goes to the power window switch. Anyone know if they're sold new anywhere? I already fixed it...
