Just how much of a moron am I?

Well, going from a 305 to a 350 is certainly better than the other way round.

What should I do with this toolbox?

Being a shade-tree machinist I see that box as similar to one of my Kennedy machinist's box. Maybe dedicate it to your taps, dies, drills, measuring instruments, Machinery's Handbook etc. Or find a similar specialization like body and fender and paint tools and supplies. On a smaller scale, I...

What have you done to your square lately??

Then it's well worth the effort. All the ones I've done that weren't in the vehicle I just stood them on a pair of jackstands. But if I was doing more I'd definitely want them more secured and standing height.

Just out of curiosity, how many rears are you planning on building?

    Proportioning Valves

1000% on what you're saying, except that valve doesn't seal off a failed section. They're inherently isolated. But I've never had a failure where the failed section didn't dump all the fluid.

    6.2 Diesel Block Heater Time

BTW, it's not a carburetor. Pumping the throttle doesn't do you any good. Go part throttle in cooler weather or full throttle in cold and hold until it starts.

    6.2 Diesel Block Heater Time

You can test the glowplugs with a meter or test light too. Pull the wire off and check for continuity. Burned out plugs will show open. I don't know that I would just automatically replace them all, but if it floats you boat...

    6.2 Diesel Block Heater Time

My first suspicion would be bad glowplugs. Does it start quickly after sitting for a long time when the weather is warmer? If not, it may be losing prime. Are you using the throttle when you're cranking? A worn injection pump starts manifesting itself by being hard to start hot. As a rule of...

What have you done to your square lately??

Absolutely. Why a retrofit system would be preferred over the one GM integrated into the design is beyond me. The biggest problems the factory systems have are... A: They're 40 years old. It's to be expected that some components are tired. But the parts are still available, so whether original...

What have you done to your square lately??

Most people speak as if heater cores are apocalyptic, but I'd agree that the GMs of the era are nowhere near that bad. For me, the biggest issue is them bolting it through from the other side. The Volvo I had was an absolute horror by comparison.

What have you done to your square lately??

Mechanically the internals are all the same. Theoretically there was such a thing as reverse rotation ring and pinion sets that were cut and lapped to turn the other direction. However, I'd guess that those disappeared even before they decided that any kind of factory prep could be replaced...

How to turn a half ton into a 3/4 ton?

My observation has been that the K10s have a perforated rear crossmember. I must admit, I haven't tried to find a non C6P K20 to compare. But if the crossmembers are different, who knows what else is different? There's also the prospect of rear leaf spring length.

    Mechanical lift pump blank plate?

It wouldn't be hard to saw one up out of a piece of steel plate. IIRC the 6.2 uses a plate with the pump, so you could probably pull that one off to use as a template.

What new tools have you got lately?

The current shop has 3ph power, but its days are numbered, and I'm not sure where we're going to end up, hence my concern about the drill press and a few other machines. I knew VFDs offered speed control, which is a nice feature on a step-pulley Bridgeport or a lathe. I just wasn't aware they...

What new tools have you got lately?

That's good to know. I have a 3 ph drill press that was going to get a rotary converter, but this is a better, and probably cheaper option. I was lucky, the Bridgeport already had a single phase motor.

What new tools have you got lately?

The Bridgeport is one of my favorite tools in the shop. Is that the 36" table? Also, you said a VFD? Wouldn't you be looking for a phase converter?
