Removing fuel tanks
If you are going to unbolt the bed to do this, you might consider ordering a new bed bolt kit. When I took my bed off, I had to cut the majority of the bolts off due to corrosion.- 69project

How to turn a half ton into a 3/4 ton?
I would look at TABCO for parts. They claim to be US made or use domestically produced steel. If nothing else their metal is a thicker than any other supplier I have used. '81 K30 4X4, 454 Exhaust Manifolds....time for headers ?
A set of long tube headers should give you anywhere between 15-30 hp bump from stock manifolds. I had an 86 C20 Burb once with a 454 and I put some Hooker Headers along with an Edelbrock Carb/Intake. Sounds like you might have put the drive shaft back in a different spot compared to where you took it out. I would take it to a machine shop and have them check the balance on it. It's also possible that the rear end wasn't set up correctly either. If you have access to lift, maybe put it up on...- 69project

You need to determine why you want an LS swap in the first place. If it's for mileage, then the trans you have needs to go.
