I have a 1973 K10 i am trying to rewire. The wires were in such a disarray i didn't trust them to a point. However I did take a few pictures for reference (but not enough). The harness i bought was cheap from eBay and i regret the purchase now, the directions are absolutely terrible. The portion in question is on the steering column, the harness for the turn signals and such. in the pictures i have most of the wires line up in slot 13 the direction do not call for a wire. However on the original harness there is clearly a tan with black stripe in this position. what would that wire be for?

That's the IP (instrument panel) harness connector. The tan/black is for the brake warning lamp no matter what level of I/P you have.

At the bottom are the wiring diagrams for the three different clusters (no gauges, gauges without tach & gauges with tach)

I suck at colors, so I'll let you decide which harness you have. These are the functions of the various wires:

39 pink - power throughout the PC board

14 lt blue - left directional indicator

15 dk blue - right directional indicator

30 tan - gas gauge sensing wire to sender

150 black - ground throughout the PC board

33 black/tan - sensing lead for brake warning light (the hydraulic switch)

The next two are used with the base (no gauges) cluster only. If the alternator output voltage is less than the system (battery) voltage, there will be a flow of electrons from the system side to the alternator side and the warning lamp will illuminate.

25 brown - alternator voltage side of alternator warning light

939 orange - system voltage side of alternator warning light

35 dk green - sensing leg for the high coolant temperature warning lamp

31 dk blue - sensing leg for the low oil pressure warning lamp

8 gray - power to instrumentation lighting

11 light grn - high beam indicating lamp
