Not super sure, but I believe it's meant to either link the block and trans to relieve some stress or the block to the frame so you don't have as much torque on the motor mounts.

Yeah, it's a strut that is supposed to bolt from that point on the engine to the cast aluminum inspection cover on the transmission.

My 305 1983 k10 has 2 of those brackets, they go from motor mounts to the torque converter cover bottom side has threaded holes.

Yep. Some models also got a third strut that ran from the pass side mount all the wat to the t-case too.

These are the support rods for 4WD trucks. They go from the motor mounts to the bell housing cover. Sometimes they get removed when people add headers. The third rod goes from the transfer case to the right side of the transmission bellhousing just above the starter.

Not quite sure. Never saw one like that before. I'm curious too.

See the replies from Craig, Greg & Christian above - they are right.

The part is called a transmission brace. There are two - one on each side and are specific to 4WD applications.

The engine end is fastened - with a nut/bolt - to an extra bracket (trans brace bracket) that is sandwiched between the clamshell and block:

The other ends are secured to the torque converter shield with bolts that thread into a pair of tapped holes. Here is the LH side bolt with the brace removed:
