i mean, I know it is a light, and it goes in by the fuel gauge, but what is the other part? the fuel gauge appears to work w/o it plugged in, so what is it?

It's a fiber optic cable that goes to the ashtray.
serious? it doesn't feel like a normal wire so definitely plausible

but i could just remove it with no ill effects?

it is a fiber optic wire like previously mentioned it light up your ash tray

it can be removed with no issues other than a dark ash tray. no big deal
