need help deciding between 245/40/20 and 245/45/20 for my 78 Silverado is there a significant difference in ride quality.

245/40=98, 245/45=110.2
110.2-98=12.23%
I seriously doubt you will notice any difference of 12.23% sidewall height regarding ride quality. A few lbs. of air pressure +/- will make a bigger difference.

Kidding aside, I don't think you will notice the slightest difference between the two.
