I blew a transmission line while plowing, I have replaced it put a gallon of fluid in but still will not move. How much fluid will it hold? I have read 4 qts to 12 qts not how much I need. It does not appear that I lost a great deal of fluid but it is hard to tell.

12 quarts empty. It's likely 4 quarts in the pan with the rest in the convertor. Hold it in reverse for a couple of minutes , then shift it through all the gears for 15 seconds each and that should provide an accurate reading.

Don't take long to pump it out but you won't empty the converter, as soon as the pan is empty and grabs air that's it, but you need to get the air out of the system just cycle through the gears a few times and check the level and add accordingly it'll come back to life.

You gotta cite the dipstick on this one because you can't recover the fluid you lost to know an exact number. That range sounds like a fluid change on the low end and a dry transmission on the high end. You blew a cooler line so I'd guess 6-8 quarts in this situation. I don't know how long you ran it like that so that's just a guess from my experience with that happening with a 4L60E. I'd say add another quart or two if it's not registering on the dipstick, and you're gonna have to check the dipstick as you add pint by pint. Make sure the engine's warm when you do it, too.
