Do you have an aftermarket trans cooler mounted in front of the radiator? More efficient cooling for less money that way.

This would be the way to go initially.

I have both, cooler and the cooler pan on 4l80e. The pan helps a bit, but most of the bonus is it gave extra capacity of the fluid compared to factory pan

I would bet those holes will get plugged with road grime over time and mud and muck.

I have a deep finned TCI on my th350, works well

I like Derale Brand cooler's. The use a stacked plate that works better than the common tube and fin design. B&M also has a few stacked plate type coolers.

Model, whatever the biggest one I can fit is.

Better than a radiator cooler? It has way more surface area to dissipate heat than two tubes running through hot ass antifreeze.

That would work, but being a heat sink type without air flowing through it, it's not going to cool as well as the coolers that have air flowing through them.

@austinado16 went all-in with a Tru-Cool plate type and pusher fan. I'm sure that keeps temps in check.

@gpmorgan went with a finned type 6 pass cooler. Easy to imagine how much more time the fluid has to lose heat when it's making more passes.

I have an aftermarket four-pass cooler that's tied into my power steering system. I'm planning on moving that one lower and adding the six-pass model for the transmission. Reason I went with a finned cooler over the plate style is because I was thinking more air can flow through these which would avoid hot spots in the radiator. No proof of that, just my opinion, but the fact that you can see right through this compared to the plate cooler I have for engine oil makes me think the air flow to the radiator is not being blocked at all.

I'd heard/read that the stacked plate coolers transferred more heat, so that's why I went with the largest version sold by B&M/TruCool (same cooler, made by LONG, reboxed for either company) at about 11"x11"x1.5".

I also installed the cast aluminum, finned, deep (extra 3.5qt capacity) B&M trans pan, and put a mechanical temp gauge into it.

The last cooling mod was to installed the deeper 3 core copper radiator.

I'm still considering installing the much longer radiator and fan shroud that was used on the 2500 2WD pickups and Suburbans, but finding all the components from a truck being parted out, has become a challenge. But that radiator is huge, extending nearly to the driver's side headlight.

I did all this because I haul a 2,500lb tent trailer up in to the mountains during the summer months. The grades we pull are steep, winding, long, and 2 lane. So speeds are down in the 35mph range, and in near triple digit heat, that generates a ton heat in the engine and transmission.

I bought what sounds like the same cooler as Austinado, Long Tru-Cool LPD4590. 28,000 GVW cooler, biggest I could find. Long makes the stacked plate B&M coolers, so you can save some cash and just get the Tru-Cool and not pay B&M markup. I got mine on Amazon for $109, and it included an install kit. I'd definitely go that route before spending money on the cooler pan.

I always install a pan with a drain in it, but it is not necessary. Just depends on how long the vehicle will be kept. It is cheap to add a bung to existing pan as well.
