Decided to change to a 4.56 gear into my 84 Dually. Have a set of 4.56 plus the carrier out of a 76 rearend. After doing all the work I find out my housing is a 73 with a .500 offset. Been in the truck since I bought it 20 some years ago. Even the carrier side bearing Spacers are different thickness. Got to looking and it has been done with cutting about .125 off the carrier. Got lucky with going to a lower gear with a smaller pinion no cutting was done. Only thing was it left a .010 shim in the left side along with a .142 spacer and .134 shims on right side with no spacer and .010 backlash and good pattern. Concern is no being able to change anything in the future due to the difference in shim packs. Plan is to cut the left side spacer to .100 and install a .117 spacer in to the right side. That should put .035 or so shim pack on either side at .010 back lash. Looking for some opinions on doing it this way or if the different shim packs would cause any problems. Thanks
