seperating 350 and 3 speed tranny

Pulled engine and tranny and cant get them separated. I can manage about a 1-2 inch gap between the engine rear and the tranny. Is there something that needs to be decoupled in the tranny before they'll come apart? Ive worked on a few engines/transmissions before and never had trouble before, but this is comparatively modern. Hints?

that;'s a 4 speed not 3 it's a sm465

Yea it was in a bind had to be. I do that all day long at work tearing down engines out of wrecked cars and trucks. If you put them in a high angle like that it puts too much pressure on the input shaft and they wont come apart.

Yeah, must have been binding. Hate to think I might have damaged the input shaft by doing that. I thought the opposite - that it would make it easier to slip off. Damn.

A lot of people call it a "3 speed w/granny", but they can call it what they want, 3+1=4. So it's a 4 speed.
