I was wondering what manual transmission (if not a nv4500) would hold up to around 500-650 whp without getting smoked every time I take it out wheeling. my plan is to put a 468 big block on my truck but i want to know ehat trans will hold that kind of power and torque.

a nv4500 with a good clutch should hold up

I dont know about the 4500 , they are not bullet proof , there are a few guy's I have talked to that have sprayed them all over the ground with big torque , but I have never had one. I would do some big time leg work on your combo before pulling the trigger. I am a fan of turbo 400/205 combo for big power big blocks. My 77 crew cab has a stout big block , ported big valve heads , roller everything , 10 to 1 comp. , comp 270hr cam , big rubber , and my 400 , (not stock) has held up great.

I am sure there are guy's here that know more about the 4500 than I so keep checking.

Turbo 400 is a auto though isn't it? I don't know to much about transmissions but i know that torque and power put alot of stress on all those components....I need a new transfercase anyway (cracked mine lol)....how much power you pushing?

the fifth gear nut on dodge has a tendency to loose up because of how bad the cummins moved around. Some guys weld them, some guys replace the shaft with an updated one.

Yes the 400 is an auto , I was just telling you my combo.

I never have had my motor dyno'ed but with my combo compared to other street car big blocks I have built my guess is 525hp and it has tons of torque. My crew cab has 44 inch swamper's and 4.88 gears and it will fry them on the street.

Im actually very surprised at this truck so far with it being an auto. It got into some places my jeep couldn't get into when I had it but less my 4runner. I just like having more control over everything. My main concern is I'll be out in BFN (Bum F*** Nowhere) and the nv4500 will grenade all over the trail. Is their any way to beef up the internal components of that trans? Buy better, stronger gearing or what have you?

why would you take a truck with a motor like that to the middle of nowhere. for a vehicle that goes into the bush I would go more with a heavy duty build than a horse power build. my 2 cents. btw I go out into the bush all the time and above all you want reliability and redundancy. a 500-650 hp motor has neither. highdesertranger

the only bad nv4500 is one with a lot of miles on it that is worn out.

they hold up well to a big block as long as its in good condition to start with

I would not use advance adapters kit to put a 205 on the nv4500 I have heard a couple horror stories about that kit.

get a good rebuilt nv4500 and it will hold up just as good as anything else will.

even if they are rebuilt? I'll stay away from that kit though for sure

if the nv4500 has a quality rebuild it will be as good as new. and hold up just as good as any other transmission will.

every transmission has weak links

I would use any of the following transmissions behind a built big block
nv4500 5 speed
sm465 4 speed
sm 420 4 speed
turbo 400 auto 3 speed
4l80e auto 3 speed with overdrive

a turbo 350 can be built to handle a lot of power but I would use a 400 over a 350
