Hello everyone. Just picked up this 84 suburban yesterday. Drove it 120 miles back home and she drives real nice. No 3rd row seat but has the anchor points. Was used as a hunting wagon by some outfitters. Planning on restoring the interior this spring. But need to do some weather stripping first. Its a bit leaky.

So, I'm mostly here to learn, and I don't know how to tell what motor or transmission I have.

Welcome from another Montana guy!!

There might be a build sticker in the glove box that shows options. Although often they have went away.

The right hand cargo door is missing the lower striker. You guys have any idea where to order a replacement?

There are two places on the motor block in which it can be i.d. First place to look is in the front of the motor, just in front of the passenger (Which is know as the right side) there is a pad in which they stamped numbers to give the information on the block. The alt. May block your view of it. You should be able to see it looking straight down from the front, not straight in. Second place is behind the drivers side head, close to where the transmission bolts to the block. For automatic trans, there should only be two 3 speeds and one 4 speed (fourth being od). Standards came with the a833 or sm465 if I am not mistaken. The transmission and rears are easily confirmed by the cover or pan shape.

Welcome from South Dakota. Nice burb. Let me know if you can't find that striker, theres a barn door burb at a local pull a part that may have one.
