Another problem, got a new long block in,it backfires while turning over. I've checked the plug wires, they aren't cross wired. If the distributor is 180 off do I need to restab it? Do I take the whole dist out and turn it 180? Won't that make it crosswired?

Yep- my guess is 180 out distributor. The first time I removed a distributor when I was a kid I had put it in backwards. No start/backfired.

Or you can put cylinder #1 at TDC then see if your rotor is pointed at your #1 spark plug wire on the cap.
