What in the heck could have caused this? 350 with stock manifolds. Im going to be switching engines soon, but the “popping” sounds are annoying.

Exhaust leak before the mufflers usually. We had a ferd in our shop, did a muffler. My uncle takes it for a test drive, he got three blocks away( by the local school lol) we hear a HUGE boom at the shop!

We went out to investigate and not a minute later my uncle is pulling back in laughing/wiping his ass off. Brand new muffler. Split WIDE open.

Backfires (same effect, raw fuel igniting downstream of the cylinders) from timing or firing order issues as well.
Get the engine running right before replacing the muffler. Or end up like I did about age 17. Brand new duals on my car. Then did a top end.
Somehow got the dist 180 off (still a mystery on the order of my recent water in gas experience, although I’m sure I cobbed it up myself, even though I totally understood the concept and ensured I was on #1 tdc compression stroke when I reinstalled the dist on #1, lol).
Peeled open 2 brand new turbo mufflers, could have been only one if I stopped while I was ahead….expensive lesion on a part one job high school budget….

Yeah, usually rich exhaust and an air leak. Mufflers don't like it when fuel ignites inside of them, lol. Cheapo mufflers don't help.
Cheap and or old surely don’t help, neither do baffles.
But you can can opener a $400 Borla muffler too if you try hard enough!

I bet you do have some hearing loss! That's about what the ferd muffler looked like, other than it was a bigger suitcase muffler lol

Wow! I had no idea that was even possible! It was that way when I bought it, so I’m glad I didn’t have to experience that.

It doesn’t smell rich at the back of the truck, but I unhooked the EGR stuff and still haven’t kept it off yet, so it’s stinky in the engine bay when on, but it doesn’t smell excessively of fuel.

My brother in law had a '78 Bronco when we were teenagers, it didn't run the best. Any time it was revved up in neutral, it would backfire out the tailpipe and shoot fire. We had a lot of laughs driving up and down N High Street in Columbus on Fri and Sat nights.
