Got started on the brakes last night and got master installed. Bleeding them and getting passenger rear unseized will be tonight's project...unless I get the secondary clutch for my sled today, then that comes first. Supposed to get snow Friday, priorities, priorities, lol.

Pulled the split rims off the front and installed the stock 16.5's from my 80 k30. Removed all the bleeders and unplugged them with a drill bit, were all plugged solid. Brake drum was a bit of a pill though. Ended up removing the axle, hub nuts, then used a special 2"plug I made to fit the axle tub, but inside the bearing and used 3 point puller to yard the drum off the shoes. Finally got it off, but ruined the shoes and keepers. It is definitely a dually axle, also uses 13"x2 1/2" shoes. Ordered parts, will figure out ratio next.

Was the only way to get it unlocked. Tried spraying lube in the drums, beating the edges with a sledge, could not get it to break free. Ended up pulling the shoes as the drum came off with the puller, bending internals all to ****. At least now I can move it once I get the parts to put it back together. Still stuck on the car trailer, sort of a pain to work on up there, lol.

A coworker had a '72 longbed fleetside, and at some point he replaced the rear brakes. He was trying to sell the truck, but was daily driving, too. He said that the entire hub assembly had to be removed to get the rear brakes off of the axle. It was an HO52. He said he didn't care about what the new owner had to do get them off of there, as he had to cut the drums to get his old ones off the axle. I can only imagine what mine will be like when I go to tackle them.

On the plus side, you can drive the truck off the trailer, if you choose to, when you get everything buttoned-up.

There is a lot of good info in that book, but also a lot of stuff that won't pertain to it at all. Knowing that, you will still be intrigued, and will look through it more than once, even if you have put tabs on pages that pertain to your truck. I can't count how many times I've looked through mine.

Did you get the Shop Manual too?

Yeah, there is a bit not related since it's all trucks, but what a gold mine of info! Even shows the pic of the cab and all the section spot weld locations, lol. I did get the shop manual, supposed to be here today sometime.

So, I found the shoes and should be here today, but other parts are drawing a blank. Trying to find the brake hardware kit and the adjuster. Everyone I've talked to so far only goes back to '65 and hardware is different since the '63 has the ebrake next to the shifter and is the drum off the back of the trans instead of in axle drum, so no self adjuster. Only has spring from one shoe to the other that keeps adjuster from turning. Joined Stovebolt.com to see if those guys can help on where to find parts and stuff.

They can help, but parts are scarce for sure. A guy bought, I think a 63 C20, that was buried in mud. He has since taken the truck apart, and had the axle gone through, but he couldn't find the hardware, he had to use the old stuff. You'll find bearings are hard to find, if they can be found at all. If they are available they are $$$$. My e-brake is next to the column, but the e-brake is in the axle, not the back of trans. You may check with a dedicated brake shop if there is one up there. They may be able get the hardware, or possibly make it. We have a brake shop here, and they make custom hoses, I think they can re-line shoes, etc. I haven't asked them outdated hardware kits, though.

Yeah, that is more common nowadays. I am torn between running my HO52, or swapping in the '68 Dana 60 I have. If you can find one of those Dana 60's from, I believe '67/'68 to '72, the C20 Suburbans came with them, they bolt right up without any modification except for the frame mounting of the panhard bar. They have 3.54 gears. Great for highway, not so much for going up steep grades, though. The C20 Suburbans had 396/TH400/3.54 Dana 60's in them. I bet that setup would rock! Not in your truck, just the C20 Suburban with that drivetrain in it.

You can still get parts for those Dana 60's but even those parts are becoming scarce.

If you don't plan on making it a dually, that opens up a lot of axle options for you. The only thing you need to be mindful of, is the track width. The newer axles are wider than the old HO axles.

I misspoke about the Dana 60. I forgot you have leaf springs. That makes it easier if you decide to get something newer, but you still have to make sure the track width will jive with your rear fender wells.

I won't muddy-up your stovebolt with information I already shared here. Those old boys should be able to get you on the right track for parts and such.

I think you have the SM420 trans. They shift towards the driver and down for reverse, and also, some come with the e-brake on the back. I wish mine had that. Speaking of e-brake, I misread you post, you said the handle is next to the shifter, not the column. That's what happens when I read quickly and respond quickly at work...lol...
