I read a suggestion somewhere recently that involved turning a modern unit bearing into a spare tire mount. I walked into the shop this morning and found an 8-lug Chevy bearing laying on the floor near my toolbox, left by a coworker. So at lunch time I went to work with scrap and a welder and made this:

It's just a couple pieces of 1/2 steel plate welded to the unit bearing, and a couple welds on the bearing so it doesn't turn. I'm going to weld a couple mounting rails at the bottom, but before I do that, does anybody know offhand what is the backspacing of a stock dually rim?

My dad did something alot similure with his willys. He took a Hub and welded it to his own tire rack that he made for the tailgate.

Huh, that's a pretty good idea.

My idea is to mount the rails (that aren't there yet) to the floor with pins so it can be removed just by pulling 4 clips and washers. Not entirely sure yet, still thinking of ideas.

So far this weighs over 25 pounds and will have a heavy wheel/tire on it, it needs to be fastened well.

I need to do something similar, my spare is usually just held in with straps. Dont know if I like the quick-remove pins though, might be an easy theft. Might also rattle after a while. I wanted to do an angled one since my spare takes up 90% of my bed.

The pins would be under the wheel and tire, so a thief would not be aware of them. Rattles are a concern though, which is why I don't have an exact plan nailed down yet. I just want the mount to be easily removable so I can haul something if needed. I have another idea going on in my head, but it's rather intricate and I would have to fabricate some kind of spring-loaded latch.
