Please explain, in great detail, how you arrived at 8.5 mpg?

i also agree with RN in that it's not so much the model of carb (although i think the q-jet ultimately probably gets the best mpg), it's what you're comfortable with and which carb is tuned the best.

For example, i have 2 quads, which, after trying to run them, concluded that they apparently need to be rebuilt. So then, i decided to use a 2G that was sitting on my self---i had to use an adapter from TransDapt on the quadrajet manifold. Then, after a few days, i "decided/discovered" that this carb too needs to be rebuilt (it's from a 76 camaro or truck). So i ended up getting a remanufactured quadrajet from Jeg's. This was all on the 4.3.

My point is, i was able to get similar mileage out of the 2G vs. the quadrajet on my previous engines---305's and 350's, because i was getting more comfortable with the 2G in terms of tuning and understanding it.

But that's all putting the eggs before the cart.

Let's discuss how you came up with the 8.5 figure.

I've had my 87 V10 for a couple years now and went through what you're going through. It came with a 305 from a 84 and a 1406 eddy carb. I cleaned it, tuned it up and got it running pretty well. New timing gears, water pump etc and I was getting 10 mpg. I had Shaun Murphy SMI build a Quadrajet, installed an eddy intake, and a Street Fighter Dizzy. Runs like Fuel injection. I get 12 mpg all year round combined driving.

I probably spent a grand on what I mentioned above but I drive this truck everywhere. Gas is cheap now but won't be forever and I'm a do it once do it right kind of guy. The way I look at if you spend $1500 a year on gas now and get your mileage up 50%, the previous upgrades will pay you back in 2 years.
