Contemplating buying a good used 700 out of an 87 burb. I plan to rebuild it and upgrade any OEM weak spots. This is a 4wd burb. I'd like to throw it in my 85 in place of the t400. I'm assuming it will bolt up to my 208 t-case and I assume it has a lockup convertor.

For $250, I think it's a deal. Just looking for others opinion and what to look out for

We'll...scrub this. Just discovered 700's output shaft won't mate to my 32 spline inputs on my 208 or 205 without a $400 AA adapter/output shaft. Deal breaker.

Yes $250 is a good price, but the 700R4 is nowhere near as strong as the Turbo400. Yes the 700R4 has a lower first gear, yes the 700R4 has overdrive, but you will need to keep a spare trans if you don't want down time. Good call on breaking the deal.

The lower 1st really isn't that much of a gain when you consider the large gap between 1st and 2nd gears. Even the drag guys have pretty much abandoned the 700 in favor of the 200-4R as a result of this.

If you really want OD, the 4L80E is the way to go, with a standalone trans controller if you want to maintain auto shifting functions. If $400 is too much the adapter, you're _really_ not going to like what it costs to properly build a 700R4 that fixes the weak parts, and the cost of a standalone controller for a 4L80E will start to look a heck of a lot more appealing. Not to mention, a bone stock 4L80E is much stronger than even a mildly built 700R4, and will stand up to more abuse as well.

It was a no brainer to put one in my K5 when the 700 started having issues, though I'm running mine as a full manual, and I regret none of it. I don't even notice the higher 1st gear.
