I’ve noticed a lot of original 1973 squares don’t have drip rails (rain gutters)
but some do, were they an option in early years?

73-74 had no option for drip rails.

i think the last one is described as a GM accessory not a factory option but was common. bucket told me that like 2 years ago so if its wrong then its His fault :)

this door off a 78 k10 without a drip rail RPO or anything has the same shiny strip one and the truck was a an absolute queen of accessories its has a sub-quality headliner sound system i would argue and a cool sunroof and various trinkets so the gm accessory thing sounds fair

I always thought they were standard equipment starting in '74. One thing I'm not sure of for the '73 model... were the rain gutters available as a factory installed option, or were they only installed later at the dealer?

My '74 came with them but I believe the lesser models didn't come with them. My truck is the Custom Deluxe and it would have had them. I think it was not an option, but a model thing. I can't explain why some that shouldn't have them, had them.

@FireTruck1984 truck pics show a Silverado 10 with a drip rail. The Cheyenne was a lesser model without one.
