Ya that's what I ended up doing. I used some heavier springs to slow the mechanical advance down a bit. I have some VORTEC heads coming though to replace the 283 heads so that should help the compression ratio
Well, seems like I have a pretty high compression motor. I can only run 26-28* total timing. With vacuum advance adding 15* anymore than that and it just rattles like crazy. Might change the heads to one with a bigger chamber.
Currently have the vacuum advance unplugged 16* initial and 21...
Well one of the problems was my distributor was junk and not producing good spark. Fixed that and seems to be working better. I have 14 initial, 14 vacuum and 21 mechanical. I had it at 12 initial but it seemed to be stuttering in the low rpms range
Not sure about the cam but the heads are...
Alright I will try that. I got it down to 16* at idle so I think turning it ccw reduces vacuum. Should put me at 50 total now. I'll try it again tomorrow and see if it still rattles
I am running 91 octane right now. That being said it is still California gas...I drove around on the highway just now and was getting a little bit of ping so I moved the initial to 12*. It only ever happens to me on the highway can't replicate it otherwise
