    Setting Timing

Ya that's what I ended up doing. I used some heavier springs to slow the mechanical advance down a bit. I have some VORTEC heads coming though to replace the 283 heads so that should help the compression ratio

    Setting Timing

Well, seems like I have a pretty high compression motor. I can only run 26-28* total timing. With vacuum advance adding 15* anymore than that and it just rattles like crazy. Might change the heads to one with a bigger chamber. Currently have the vacuum advance unplugged 16* initial and 21...

Ah. It does have that inline thing on it.

    Setting Timing

I also think I may have a vacuum leak from my brake booster. I replaced it last week, but when I hit the brakes at idle the rpms go up

    Setting Timing

Well one of the problems was my distributor was junk and not producing good spark. Fixed that and seems to be working better. I have 14 initial, 14 vacuum and 21 mechanical. I had it at 12 initial but it seemed to be stuttering in the low rpms range Not sure about the cam but the heads are...

I would like some nitrous eventually, but I'll save that for another time. Thanks for all the help too

    Setting Timing

Gotcha, well hopefully it doesn't come down to that. This timing business is serious stuff. Would msd do anything to help?

    Setting Timing

Ah, I see. Where do you get 100 octane?

Haha what were you going to say?

    Setting Timing

I am attempting to make it my daily lol

    Setting Timing

    Yep I am running 91

    Setting Timing

Alright I will try that. I got it down to 16* at idle so I think turning it ccw reduces vacuum. Should put me at 50 total now. I'll try it again tomorrow and see if it still rattles

    Setting Timing

It didn't like the 52 at cruise I had some rattle for sure. When I adjust the can does turning it clockwise add or subtract advance?
  14. Wdschell

    Setting Timing

Looks like my vacuum can is adding about 18* at idle. Should I adjust that down a bit?
  15. Wdschell

    Setting Timing

I am running 91 octane right now. That being said it is still California gas...I drove around on the highway just now and was getting a little bit of ping so I moved the initial to 12*. It only ever happens to me on the highway can't replicate it otherwise

    Setting Timing

Just checked this morning and my initial timing is 14* BTDC, with mechanical 34* all in at 3k and with the vacuum advance hooked up initial is about 30-31* so that puts my total about 52-53.
  17. Wdschell

    Setting Timing

I believe the vacuum can is adjustable. So I'll check my total again tomorrow then move the advance over to full manifold and adjust everything from there. I appreciate the help I have been fighting this for about two weeks before I found the coil was failing. What kind of milage should I expect?
  18. Wdschell

    Setting Timing

So it will be 14 initial plus 15 from the vacuum. So 30* total at idle.
  19. Wdschell

    Setting Timing

Ok I am all in around 3k and about 34 degrees right now. Just wanted to make sure I was doing it right. I will move my vacuum advanve over to full vacuum too. Will I need to readjust mixture when I do that?

    Setting Timing

Also my vacuum advance is currently connected to the ported spark option on my edelbrock 1406

    Setting Timing

Good evening everyone, I have been trying to tune my timing for a while now and have read just about every thread on timing there is on here or hotrod.com etc and I am still confused. My question is when setting my total timing, do I set the RPM that I want the mechanical advance to be all in...

    4.1L to 350 Swap

Alright, I will just put everything together and give it a try. Can I reuse the same flywheel that was on my L6? I have the muncie 465 transmission and from what I have read that should bolt up given that its a chevy engine.

    4.1L to 350 Swap

Ya, I have no idea what it is, only that it was recently rebuilt and still running when the guy pulled it. Have not even pulled the pan to see if it is 2 or 4 bolt.

    4.1L to 350 Swap

Thats what I was thinking about doing before I found out about the heads. I had to do something similar when I rebuilt my 6 and got rid of the all-in-one head/intake thing. Is it possible that my block is a 327? They guy I got it from said it was out of his 65 chevelle and he thought it was...

    4.1L to 350 Swap

The casting number on the head is 3795896. That's what I was afraid of. It can't ever be an easy swap can it? :)
