Check out Rockford Fosgate's wizard - http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/Support/BoxWizard.aspx
The wizard is perfect if you buy a Fosgate sub and very close otherwise.
Yep. Vent is too small and the design has it in the wrong location on the filler neck. A comparison between newer models and the older ones shows how it was improved.
Think 72 and older were slightly narrower. If you look up the differential pin/leaf spring centers for the squares on a 4x4 (73-87) you'll find 32" which is also the measurement from the center of one frame rail to the center of the other. Since bumpers are same same between 2x's and 4x's that...
Not to turn things negative (I have done the 4L80E swap, more in a second) but the OD choice of the 80E vs the 60E is one that needs to be considered. The power that gets robbed by the larger Trans has to be valued by usage need otherwise I'd go smaller. If you tow or load the truck down it...
While working on the dash this weekend I had some ideas for what to use the ash tray space for. Maybe tuck aux fuse panels in there or weld it up and smooth it out (delete it). Anyone use it for something else? Lots of space there.

And the width of the unit
And the width of the bezel
A little tight on the bezel but if you cheat...
Cool, I didn't even notice and usually catch stuff like that...odd. That was a mod that I almost did when I was having a problem finding a 32 spine passengers side drop np241. Is it the 60 a 78-79?
Ive considered the double-d myself. Wonder if you could move the heater control down and then put the double-d in the above two spots combined? The issue might be depth.
I say slam it! There's something about it that I like. I agree with previous comments though - do it without hackin' so you, or the next owner, can undo it if you want.
