Rebuilding low mileage barn find 350, low hours, clean internals, bearing damage.

Have an 86 suburban I picked up, non-running. 350 in it was toast. Picked up this supposed low mileage 350 that was in a barn and hasn’t run in 40ish years. Internals look really clean bearing damage found Need to get the tool to pull the harmonic balancer so I can get the...

I am going to start a new thread, this is no longer about the previous engine. Appreciate everyone’s advice.

Cam shaft looks surprisingly good for the way these mains look. The bearing with the deepest cuts has created a light scratch on the camshaft, possibly too deep for a polish. Need to rent to tool to pull the harmonic balancer so I can pull it out to clean and inspect. Sharing some photos, my...

Looks like they are .010 Noticed some scratches across the bearing also.

The engine I am replacing, had 4 cylinders with shattered rings and ringlands. Would like to avoid that for sure. I picked up the handy grinder for the rings and will be making sure to measure everything. Have the haynes techbook for the 350 to reference. Crossing my fingers for a smooth 'rebuild'.

I keep hearing the tolerances are much more forgiving on these than modern engines. I am all about putting that to the test and seeing what backyard things I can do. It's like winning a game. I do like to make sure the gambles I make are good ones, which is hard for me to judge this far into an...

I could go both ways on this. I don't have a ton of experience past head gaskets and light head work (have had too many 80s subaru's, head gaskets are a given). Not having touched a crank, it would definitely be better left to the pro's. Too bad I am a curious hack who needs to try everything...

Thank you for the bit of optimism. The engine is really clean so I have been really exited up until this point. It’s going in a vehicle that will not be my daily, is not a race car and was just kind of rotting in someone’s field. I want to get it on the road and have some fun with it, not...

Ope! Spoke too soon. Noticing some hanging metal and pretty sloppy drilled holes from balancing.

I may have lucked out pretty big, this engine is CLEAN.

Picked up the engine last night. PO fogged it and made sure it was sealed up decently before storing away. Crank turned smooth as butter, compression on all cylinders, pulled a valve cover off, and it looked factory fresh inside. I ordered all the bearings, rings and gaskets to do a refresh on...

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I don’t think I will be able to do compression. Slammed at work and renting a truck to grab it. It’s going to be a quick mission. It’s already turning and making woosh noises out of the spark plug holes. I’m feeling lucky, we will see.

Will do! I am bringing a scope. It’s sat for 40 years. Should I expect a certain level of rust in the cylinders?

The intake that's on it now is not dual plane, but I am not sure if that's what was on the engine when it was in operation by the original owner. I believe the person I bought it from added a few bits and pieces. Definitely makes sense of what I am seeing. Tore it down further this weekend...

I can see the cross hatch. They look fine, not much different from any other cylinder I have seen in my other working engines. I wouldn’t mind doing a ****** ball hone and putting new pistons in, I have done it once before and it was really easy. I know these aren’t balanced from the factory...
