Rebuilding low mileage barn find 350, low hours, clean internals, bearing damage.

Have an 86 suburban I picked up, non-running. 350 in it was toast. Picked up this supposed low mileage 350 that was in a barn and hasn’t run in 40ish years. Internals look really clean bearing damage found Need to get the tool to pull the harmonic balancer so I can get the...

I am going to start a new thread, this is no longer about the previous engine. Appreciate everyone’s advice.

Cam shaft looks surprisingly good for the way these mains look. The bearing with the deepest cuts has created a light scratch on the camshaft, possibly too deep for a polish. Need to rent to tool to pull the harmonic balancer so I can pull it out to clean and inspect. Sharing some photos, my...

Looks like they are .010 Noticed some scratches across the bearing also.

The engine I am replacing, had 4 cylinders with shattered rings and ringlands. Would like to avoid that for sure. I picked up the handy grinder for the rings and will be making sure to measure everything. Have the haynes techbook for the 350 to reference. Crossing my fingers for a smooth 'rebuild'.

I keep hearing the tolerances are much more forgiving on these than modern engines. I am all about putting that to the test and seeing what backyard things I can do. It's like winning a game. I do like to make sure the gambles I make are good ones, which is hard for me to judge this far into an...

I could go both ways on this. I don't have a ton of experience past head gaskets and light head work (have had too many 80s subaru's, head gaskets are a given). Not having touched a crank, it would definitely be better left to the pro's. Too bad I am a curious hack who needs to try everything...

Thank you for the bit of optimism. The engine is really clean so I have been really exited up until this point. It’s going in a vehicle that will not be my daily, is not a race car and was just kind of rotting in someone’s field. I want to get it on the road and have some fun with it, not...

Ope! Spoke too soon. Noticing some hanging metal and pretty sloppy drilled holes from balancing.

Picked up the engine last night. PO fogged it and made sure it was sealed up decently before storing away. Crank turned smooth as butter, compression on all cylinders, pulled a valve cover off, and it looked factory fresh inside. I ordered all the bearings, rings and gaskets to do a refresh on...

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I don’t think I will be able to do compression. Slammed at work and renting a truck to grab it. It’s going to be a quick mission. It’s already turning and making woosh noises out of the spark plug holes. I’m feeling lucky, we will see.

Will do! I am bringing a scope. It’s sat for 40 years. Should I expect a certain level of rust in the cylinders?

The intake that's on it now is not dual plane, but I am not sure if that's what was on the engine when it was in operation by the original owner. I believe the person I bought it from added a few bits and pieces. Definitely makes sense of what I am seeing. Tore it down further this weekend...

I can see the cross hatch. They look fine, not much different from any other cylinder I have seen in my other working engines. I wouldn’t mind doing a ****** ball hone and putting new pistons in, I have done it once before and it was really easy. I know these aren’t balanced from the factory...

Anything is possible if you believe in yourself. I believe in my ability to do things wrong enough to cause serious headache. It’s a super power. In all seriousness, I thought I ordered the right size, I ordered a boat load of parts all at once, and tried to slam this thing onto the road. Why...

Engine is out and finally apart. Found the issue as soon as I pulled out the piston in Cylinder 1. Rings and ringlands are decimated. Cylinder walls look fine, not catching my fingernail on any scratches. I feel like I am at the point of bore and new pistons all around. I am already this deep...

I tested compression on the good bank and found a noticeable difference. Replacing head gasket didn’t help at all. Which wasn’t to surprising. Took a step back to regroup, then got sick. Finally back at it today. Everything removed from the engine, ready to be pulled. Found a lift to borrow...

I like the way you think. I was trying to think of ways to pull the cylinders in my driveway, probably easiest to pull the engine to do it and I may have just tracked down a cherry picker I can borrow. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to replace the 4 pistons and not the other 4. Which is why...

@Ricko1966 Torqued down the head. No change to the free air flow into the crankcase. The normal bank pressurizes like a mostly-sealed cylinder should. Definite difference. It wasn't too surprising, knowing air was flowing into the crankcase, I couldn't think of a way the head or gasket would be...

No, but it did occur to me right after I ripped the head off, that I should have done that. I have the head cleaned up and back on the truck already. I will test the other bank tonight to see how it reacts. I had to order a heater core also since mine was leaking and since the coolant is...

@Ricko1966 took the heads off, had to see what the heck was going on. Without fail, it was a mistake of my own making. Spark plugs were hitting pistons, I imagine that contributed to some sort of displacement of the head or gasket. Hoping the damage is contained to the head. Going to clean up...

Hooked up to air, very healthy stream of air coming out of oil fill when air pressure (about 130 psi) is applied to cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7. Stream sounds and feels the same for each cyl.

That would be pretty cool, I just have the tank now, it's a 4 gallon pancake. Would like to eventually install it under the Suburban with pump to fill, this would be a cool build. I will keep my eye out for a junk fridge or AC. Sounds like my friend is willing to load up the compressor and bring...

I have a broken one at the shop, it's a small craftsman but won't build pressure past 30psi. I tore it apart to see if I could replace a valve etc. but it's cheaply built and didn't have anything replaceable to fix the issue. Was going to use our good compressor here to pressurize it and use it...
