I’ve got a Canadian built 1986 GMC, 1500 4x4. It’s anyone’s guess as to what parts are original lol.

I am having some problems with my wipers. I’ve only got one speed, and they are not automatically returning to the bottom of the window. The markings on the wiper switch have worn off but it looks like the truck originally had intermittent wipers as well, as there are positions before the high and low. (Also has some buttons on the end, perhaps from cruise?) Also when I press the windshield wash button the wipers don’t stop unless I turn them on, and then off again. Seems like the wipers don’t have much power, like they can barley drag themselves across the windshield as well.

Any ideas where I should start looking to troubleshoot these issues? I haven’t done much yet as I was hoping someone may have experience or be able to give me a starting point. Any help would be appreciated.

The best place to start is by replacing the wiper motor, since it's very weak. Then see what problems might be left afterward.

They are a little more now I think, like $40-45 with the washer pump.

his is a 86 so it shouldn't have the built in pump if I remember right. I think in 85 they went to the electric in washer fluid tank pump? I knw I just took one off a 85 and addapted it onto a 81 since I couldn't keep original in wiper one working

there was a plug in option for delay wipers that was a factory setup. Very possible your wiper motor is getting tired. Have you tried checking all the wiper transmission and adding a few drops of oil?

I haven't, but I'll give it a try.
