Will the Shifter from a cast iron top work on an aluminum top on a SM465

I have a cast iron top cover on my trans now and I have bought the aluminum top cover to relocate the shifter back, but the aluminum cover doesnt have a shifter with it. I was told that the shifter is unique to the cover for the iron top and would not work on the aluminum top. Does anyone know if this is true? I have looked on google but have had no luck at locating info on what the difference is.

The shifters are different. The one for the aluminum top has a longer stub below the pivot ball.
