I know this isn't a big block chevy forum but I want y'alls opinion. There is a 454 I'm looking at for my truck. It's a well built 454. Just rebuilt, 781 heads, good new flat top pistons, comp cam, comp cam hardware. Hasnt been run. A good engine. Just ballpark. Thanks!

Go fish....

Receipts for any of this?

It's hard to put a number on it without real info - cam # (for specs and type), "comp cam hardware" (? - this could be anything), cast / hypereutectic / forged pistons? stock bore? small or big valves?

Is it assembled or not?

What's included - covers, pan and intake or bare long block?

If no receipts, I'd say $1000 IF it looks fresh on the tops of the heads and intake valley. Any engine can be steam cleaned and painted to look fresh.

If EVERY surface has paint (like the part of the block deck that sticks out from under the head, etc) I'd be very skeptical of it being freshly built.

I also question this - "good new flat top pistons", good and new?? Should all new pistons be good?

Fwiw, stock pistons look somewhat like a flat top yet only yield 7.9:1 on most 454 applications. Get a part number.

Someone will probably have $2,000 at a minimum in a build like that giving them the benefit of the doubt of assembling it themselves. And that depends on how deep into the heads the machinist traveled. they could have upwards of $1,000 in the heads alone depending on how nuts they got with machine work and replacing parts. (new valves, springs, retainers, locks, seals, etc.) And machine work and replacement parts on the block would be probably in the neighborhood of 1,000ish as well. If they have receipts to prove all the work and parts then $2,000-$3,000 isn't out of the question. IF it all checks out. The heavy duty 4 bolt 454 block alone in my truck, my buddy at the engine shop wanted to give me $600 for the bare block and give me a 2 bolt replacement block to build off of because "that block is really desirable and you don't need a 4 bolt for what you're doing". Of which he added that since I had it, it would make the best foundation to start with. (some may remember my truck started it's life before me as a cheater class pulling truck so it had good parts to start before I rebuilt the engine.) So depending on what he's got it could get pricey quick. But it's all worth what someone is willing to pay. But buyer beware, because quite frankly lots of "fresh" engines listed on for sale sites are simply "DuPont overhauls" that merely look fresh.

I'm going to assume that by "good new flat top pistons" he means they're a good name brand of new pistons..? Lol

It also depends on where you live. My buddy in MA sells running stock 454s for $350, no one will touch them at $500. Meanwhile, me in Chicago, yeah, these guys want $1000 for a seized shortblock.

Thanks for your replies guys. Here's what the guy says. Nothing real specific. I guess I can reach out and get more info.

"454 75 model with matching 781 heads, heads have been opened up with 2.19 and 1.88 stainless steel undercut valves, new comp cams springs retainers and 10degree locks anti rotaters and valve job , .30 over hypereutectic flat pistons has studs on the main caps instead of bolts all new parts
Aluminum intake will go with it
New distributor, oil pump with stud
Has a comp cams thumper camshaft, timing chain
Receipt for just machine shop is $2200 not including parts"

If it's still low compression and has a Thumper cam, it may be a bit of a slug in a heavy vehicle. Sounds like a mild build, just a bit hotter than a stock truck motor.

It could be worth his machine shop bill. Buying someone else's untested engine is always a gamble.

I had my 79 rebuilt professionally two years ago. The motor was trashed. Machine work, parts, and assembly was $5200. Even though it has the paperwork (435hp), I’d now rather have a 20 mpg 5.7 LS in mine. Just My unsolicited opinion.

I just bought this 454 and turbo 350 this summer here in Texas. The motor has a comp can, 68 camaro intake, long tube headers, alt, p/s pump and Edelbrock carb with 30,000 miles on it. The trans has been rebuilt and has shift kit in it. He just pulled it out of his square. He fired it up for me(has starter too)when I got there. Pulled valve covers and it was really clean too. It's ready to drop in as it sits and I payed $2,400 for all of it.

I can't get pics to load but, I'm gonna take it to the shop next week and they'll swap motors and transmissions out for me. Only have to work Monday then I'm off till the second.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year!
