I'm running a clockable mini starter I bought off of eBay from Skip White Performance, works great. Cost was about $80 shipped.

yes, but to what degree i'm not sure. I know they claimed it to be good for 14.0:1 compression. and it doesn't matter how hot or cold the engine is, it sounds exactly the same every time I hit the key.

I use the Remy 96206 in all of my Chevy's. It's the late model 95+ gear reduction starter that was used on just about everything GM made. The only downside is they lose that direct-drive starter noise that just sounds like an old iron bowtie, with the gear reduction they sound very late model.

If you have a 1980 or earlier block you need special starter bolts with metric knurled shanks and standard threads, part number 12338064. 1980 or later should all be metric and use the standard GM metric knurled starter bolts.

I'm looking for a good starter for my 454.
Has anyone tried this starter

Any other good ones out there?

I bought a cheap rebuilt one from Oriellys and the threads on the primary power post stripped when I tightened the nut. Fed up, I bought a brand new one from Summit. So far it’s working great. It’s lighter weight and the posts for the primary power and the switch wire are in easier to get to positions than a stock starter. Very happy with it.

It went on a stock 454.

@Maxwellvis recently installed the starter off the 1997 454 we have onto the 454 in the pickup truck.
It sounds different for sure.
But it turns all that iron over so easy...

Take my advice and don't buy cheap off brand starters. I bought two of them a few years back and they were noisy junk. I used both for cores on starters off of a 95 350 at Advance. Very nice little starters for the money, quiet, and crank that 454 like nobody's business! Oh, and lifetime warranty. I'm seriously happy with them!
