What do you fellas/ gals do for underhood lighting? I’m thinking about adding one of them gmt400 underhood light setups to my truck. Do I NEED it ? No. Do I want it ? YES.
So I'm just wondering if there’s some slick stock ones that I don’t have? Maybe some led versions that look good and work well?

Search Google images for gm part 15528774. There's tons of them out there. Usually about $30 - $40.

Yeah I have that version on my 98. While I plan on adding that as an oh **** flashlight, I more mean one that kicks in while opening the hood. Either with the tilt activation or switch / plunger style.

Yeah, the one Jerry’s telling you about is in the W Bodies and a rash of others. It’s a neat idea. What you want is the single wire mercury switch light that kicks on when the hood’s opened a certain amount. Any old B/G Body should have that, and I would check the Fs and Corvettes, too. I think they reproduce them, and it might be better than a used one. Those old ones can be fickle sometimes in my experience. It’s nice to have for a late night oil/coolant/air filter/washer fluid check when you’re too lazy to pull your phone out for the light.

They’re a little expensive new for my taste. Fords used something similar in principle in 1987-97 OBS trucks, but they seem to hold up better over time (more stable ground maybe or better internals or both). I guess it’s true what they say, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I like the 'wind-up the cord' type. Put a nice bright LED bulb in it and you can go to the rear of the truck with it.

I see them in the boneyard a lot.

I had a pair of backup par lights that came off a plow truck sander. They were just sitting on the shelf for a few years so I put them to good use.

I put this exact one on my 82 K5, came off a 90 Burb.
I like to have the factory look.

I see big ass lights AND a reel light like mentioned on here. I like your placement. But sir... what is that gauge back there for?
Good looking setup. Very utilitarian.

Yeah, that's a tach. Like Denis suggested, it's mounted there for when I'm tuning a carburetor or adjusting ignition timing.
