That center pin is wallowed out in its hole. Looks like someone welded it in place once upon a time. Of course the weld gave up... because they welded it the ends of the inner axles spun on the center pin causing wear there. The ends of the axles are sharp and worn too... just my luck. I’m sure the bearings are bad as well as the inner axle shafts from this “ great idea.”
And of course the carrier is junk too. so reusable parts. ... axle house and that’s about it. How common are the 5 lug 12 bolts?
better to buy used one?

That looks like gods way of saying time for a posi. In terms of a direct swap, any 73-81 Truck 12 bolt will work, or a later 10 bolt will fit with little work. @78C10BigTen swapped a 10 bolt into his 78 recently.

I pondered the newer 10 bolt. But I think the way I drive I’ll need the 12 lol!

10 bolts are actually stronger than 12 bolts in regards to the pinion bearings, both in the end are still relatively weak (each for its own reasons). A real upgrade would be a 14 bolt semi floater from a 454 SS truck, already 5 lug, but those are not something you trip over a bunch.

Get new bearings, fresh set of "C" clips (no wear) and a Truetrac, the axles will be fine.

Second that. Don't forget to check the outer axle bearings. If you don't have a lot of horsepower you should be fine with the "weak" 10 or 12 bolt. Would be a good moment to change your rear end ratio if you ever thought about that.

I think I like the 3.73. I use it a lot for driving about 100 miles one way to work. I like the sound of that true trac but goodness she looks expensive without any bearings! what’s the series 3 and 4 ring/pinion?

I'd go that far with one in a heartbeat. But my normal commute is around 60 miles round trip.

I was commuting with mine out of state for a while, was putting on a good 1000 miles a week easy. I got a beater car after a while though to keep the miles off my truck (and to cut the gas bill in less than half). Though I never really got back into dailying my truck, put less 5k on it since then for sure, and that was a few years ago. Bought a few newer cars since then and the truck sits there looking sad most of the time, I take it out once in a while to blow the cobwebs off, or if I need to do some work with it now and then. I really should take it to work more often. I'm gonna re-gear it in the spring and that should motivate me to drive it more... I hope
