I would start checking that fuel is getting to carb. Check fuel filters, pump, lines.

sounds like a fuel issue to me also. plugged filter or maybe a plugged vent. it’s prob running the carb dry and that’s why it dies

I had an issue on my grain truck where the rubber line was cracked and sucking air. It would idle great and you could rev it to the moon, but once you started going down the road it would start cutting out real hard at higher speeds and bog.

How stock is the truck? How often is it driven? If this thing still has a catalytic converter that has blown and jammed up and your exhaust is clogged it could cause similar issues. Would still idle and fart around, but as soon as you start trying to pass more air through the system it would have nowhere to go and smother itself. It wouldn't just shut off though, you'd feel it struggling greatly. Not very likely, I'd first suspect fuel issues or maybe something with your distributor (I forget how far back the automatic timing adjustment goes), but you sound stumped so I assume you checked the basics already. Just throwing out an issue that is rarely considered.

If you are not the original owner of the vehicle check the entire vehicle very carefully to make sure that a previous owner hasn't somehow integrated some FORD parts into it! That would explain it!! If so, remove the contaminated parts and replace with genuine GM!

well we were thinking maybe it has something to do with losing compression losing cylinders because it revs super high at 40 now i checked fuel and its getting fuel going to pull plugs tonight and check to make sure theres no oil on them and that im getting compression hoping i didnt slip a piston ring

What do you mean it revs? You mean like the 700r4 lost it's 2/3 shift and just slips?

If it revs really high and runs normal but won't go faster it doesn't sound like an engine problem, more like a tranny issue. Either like bucket said you could be slipping, or maybe just stuck in a low gear?

By cuts off, do you mean the engine shuts off? Or cuts off as a miss or trans slips and it won't go any faster???
