my 83 Chevy c20 was driving and shifting ok, but was not running very well. I replaced the carburetor, now it runs better but it is shifting really hard. Is there any correlation between the two or is it just a coincidence?

What tranny do you have? Did you go back with same carb and base gasket? Did you re-set your transmission cable?

Yeah, bedwards, is on the right track. You need to reset your kick down cable. Look on this site there are several posts about how to do it correctly.

If you drive it around too long with the detent cable jacked up, you can cause irreparable transmission damage. That adjustment is not something you wanna play with - make certain you get it fixed right and don't dally.

Good luck!

If it’s a TH350 trans, no kickdown cable means the trans will short shift at WOT. It won’t technically hurt anything just won’t perform as well as it could.

If it’s a 700 (based on your discussion I’m guessing that’s the case) running around with the TV cable adjustment off will damage the trans eventually.

You didn’t mention what carb you installed, you may need to get the proper linkage to set the cable right. The TV cable adjustment needs to be correct, “close enough” ain’t gonna get it! It’s also not enough for the cable to simple be tight at WOT, the TV cable range of motion is designed to gradually raise line pressure as throttle angle increases. Just because the cable is tight at WOT doesn’t mean the pressure is right at less than WOT. This is why you hear so many horror stories about people who can’t get their part throttle shifts correct. If the pressures aren’t high enough, 1 or 2 sloppy sliding shifts will be enough to permanently glaze the clutches or band. It’s all downhill from there.

ideally, a line pressure gauge is needed. Any oil gauge that will read to 300psi is good. You need around 90psi at idle, slowly pull the tv cable, it should go up to about 250ish, depending on the valve body calibration. It’s common to see the pressure flutter with the engine at idle, but at a slightly elevated idle speed it should be pretty steady.

Hope that helps.

if its 700r4 overdrive tranny then you need to set that TV cable asap dont drive until its set properly or you risk burning up fwd clutch pack. it is TV cable not a detent cable, on the 7004 models. a detent cable is passing/downshiift cable.. and this is not what a 700r4 cable is. a 700r4 TV cable controlls all forward shifting. totally and completely different. TV is line pressure for shifting. throttle valve. if it is TH350 trans then mnake sure modulator vac line is connected to full time intake manifold source. or it wil be stuck in first gear.

Could be as simple as a th350 or th400 without the vacuum modulator hooked up or hooked up wrong. What transmission do you have.
