I'm in need of a new tach and was wondering what the general consensus was for the smaller sized tachs? Any good ones that stand out? It's already determined I cannot afford the $200+ Proparts Spek tach with built-in rev limiter and shift light (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PPL-334228/ ), but I like the looks of Summit's offering...

It's 3-1/2" in diameter so I'll have to cut some on the dash. (future re-design of the dash/instruments mod??? Hmmm...) Those who know me know that's not something I'm afraid of, the dash is already hacked pretty badly. But at $50 is seems pretty affordable if it is a durable unit. If anyone has any others to suggest post up! As long as they dont break the bank!

I've only ever bought one new tach, and it was just a cheap little one from ebay. I only picked it because of it's small size, classic looks... and price too. I think it's a "Super Pro". The rest have been used Sun Super Tachs, or I've installed factory tachs.

Do you need or want the shift light. I bought the Eqquis from O'Rileys, I paid under 300 for all the gauges.

I would really like to have a shift light, and am still leaning towards the one with the built-in rev limiter. My truck (hopefully) will be going auto trans next year, I've been talking with HRPC about a reverse-pattern standard shift valve body for racing. The shift light will be great for letting me know when to bang the next gear, and the rev limiter will help keep from floating valves with these lower gears. I can get the rev limiter built into the ignition module but its ony for 5,000-10,000 rpms, and a little tricky to set. With the new engine setup it will redline at around 6,500 so 6,000 rev limit would be fine, and a shift light for around 5,000-5,500. Those are good-looking gauges, if my truck was nicer I would shoot for something like that.
