so i got the trans hump in my 2wd cab, and the linkage all hooked and it works fine ( not running). With the truck in in drive and running i can shift into 4hi and 2 hi with no problem. But when i put the truck into nutrel and try to go into 4low it grinds and then i have to shut the truck off to get it into park while its Tcase is in nuturel, it grinds.

does it sound like there is a problem? or am i just not useing this old stlye 4x4 correctly. its a 208 case on a turbo 400

Thanks Liam

My 208 grinds until it goes into 4lo also, I just hold the clutch in for a second and it engages without noise but sometimes it grinds.

My '76(np205) goes into 4 lo as long as the trans is in neutral, but my gmt800 has to be rolling under 5km/hr to drop in.
Iirc np208 must also be rolling slightly, it will grind slightly but should drop right in. You can also try shifting it in while truck is shut off and see if that works better.

My NP208 Automatic did the same thing when I was testing it to buy it. Little did I know, cuz the idle was up high with the auto choke was why. I now put it in N, idling about 800 rpm it's fine, but not at 1400 rpm. I've since adjusted the high idle choke too.

My 208 slids right into low with the clutch in never grinds I can even slid it in while moving at slow speeds with no grinding.

Nope. Normally to get into to 4Low, you have to be damn near stopped in the Tcases I've used.

They are not synchronized. The gears that is. Turn off the truck or be in neutral at a complete stop and shift it quickly.

Looking in the book there is supposed to be 0.200" play between the shift linkage's rear rod nut and the swivel block on the bottom of the shifter, when in the 4-HI position. Might want to check that spec, too tight or too loose it could cause problems.

Yeah, to get into 4 LOW, that is how is mine is. I can be inching along but that's it, otherwise must be at a complete stop. IIRC, to get out of 4LOW, even at inching along it won't come out. Must be stopped and in N to come out with motor ideling.
