What do you guys recommend? I have a stock '83 Jimmy beater with 31's. I will probably be off road as much as on, but not anything severe. Mostly the beach, maybe a road trip to Uwharrie once in a blue moon.

I’ve almost always used Monroe with good results. The only exception is I used Gabriel for my steering stabilizer because it was viscous (oil-filled) instead of gas charged, which I didn’t want to install it and have to fight a stronger tendency for the thing to want to decompress and pull to the opposite side. If I was in the market right now, I’d try the KYB Excel-G OEM replacements, RockAuto has them, and there’s a $25 mail-in rebate on them, but anything AC Delco, Gabriel, or Monroe is more than likely gonna work well. People run Bilstein on the higher end, but it doesn’t sound like you want to break the bank on this, and I wouldn’t either.

Personally i've never cared for Monroe or Gabriels. I have seen too many fail at 20-30k . Bilstein has worked well for me, over 100k on the current set and still going strong.

I think there are good and bad in any brand. I have always used Gabriel because I got a good deal on em when I started working on cars and trucks. Not very many failures and always taken are of if it did happen. If you find something that works, stay with it!!! (til it goes bad)

It would take decades for me to reach 30k. It's my 3rd vehicle, but only 4x4.
