Hey guys, I'm finally working enough OT to afford the 383 I've been wanting. Basically I want more power.

My engine I have in my lifted K10 is a 350, 4 bolt main, with flattop pistons, 062 vortec heads, A CL12-206-2 cam specs being 212/212 @ .050, .440 intake and .440 exhaust. 110 LSA. Flat tappet. Long tube headers. True duals, super 44 flowmasters. 700r4 and 3.73s with eaton LSD. It has good torque, I pull one of my three boats or a lowboy literally every weekend balls to the wall 85 mph in third gear and it pulls great.

But, I want more acceleration, more power than I need. Not race truck status but fast.

I have a 350 block already. Im aboutto look up the numbers and post them. I was wondering if any of you had input on what rotating assembly to buy, and also things like camsizes and heads. I was thinking about performance aluminum heads. I can get a set of those for around 600 bucks and I have read good reviews. I was also thinking about FI tech Fuel injection.

Im about to start researching more but basically any input would be great.

Flat top pistons? Links on good flowing aluminum heads that wont break the bank? What sizecam that wont kill my low end? I think my block is roller camcapable and if so, shouldi do a roller cam? These are all questions I have lol. THANKS to any help!

Oh, that's a nice one to build. YES to roller cam!

I've built a lot of 383's in my head, but never got to do one for real, lol.

Just my opinion, try to find a 96 or later Vortec motor. It's roller and will have the Vortec heads. Vortec heads, Roller Cam and 383 long stroke cubes oughta make a nice screamer with plenty of powwa !!! I have a feeling those vortec heads with 383 stroke will give you a helluva compression ratio, so you might want to choose a bigger cam to bleed off a tad bit of compression in overlap. Otherwise you won't have a choice but to run 92 octane. Remember, there is a difference in dynamic and static compression. And remember with big cam and valve overlap you lose some of the compression, so you just might up with the better of all worlds. Big Roller Cam Stroker Motor. Just don't expect much in the mpg area but it'll have plenty a grunt and lottsa balls.

I would say a lot depends on your budget. Your current Vortec top-end would go nice on a 383. But if you have the funds, I would say go with some aftermarket aluminum heads. You will be able to get away with more compression (within reason), and shouldn't have the over-heating fragility the Vortecs are known for. Some nice 180/190cc runner size and larger valves.

Ditto what bucket said, yes to roller cam. Camquest seemed to like the 12-412-8. That was 212/218 @ .050 .487/.490 110 LSA, 9.5 CR, heads with 2.02/1.6 valves, dual plane intake, headers and 750 carb. It spit out 376 HP @ 5000 rpm and 468 FT/LB @ 3500 rpm.

I can't really comment on the rotating assembly. Kits are all over over the place to do a 383, so it can be a one stop shopping experience.

Yes on the roller cam. I would call your perferred company and see what they suggest based on your truck, if you get too crazy, might need a different converter(if applicable )

As for heads, id see what dart has to offer or see who makes summit racings heads, both are pretty decent priced, i have dart iron eagles on my 383, they have been good for the last 8 years.

I am using a scat rotating assembly, with hyperutectic flat tops, cast steel crank,

My motor is set up with the dart 180cc heads w/64 cc chambers, 10.4:1 comp, erson roller cam 286/294 abv. Duration .548/.548 lift, air gap intake and QFT 750 double pumper. 2500 stall

I am not nice to it when i drive it, ever, locked 4.56's and 315/75/17 tires. No breaks on the motor in the 8 years ive had it, and the truck goes ,like now.

However i mix 100 low lead into my fuel to keep detonation at bay, but we only have 90 at the pump here

I was also thinking about FI tech Fuel injection.

I was going to comment on this too, but didn't get around to it. FI Tech looks really intriguing. Simple four wire hookup to get it going. And they have that Command Center that allows you to run your mechanical fuel pump. Personally, I would skip the CC, and use that money to do an in-tank pump set up.

Holley is coming out with the Sniper FI soon. It also is a four wire hookup to compete with FI Tech, and priced the same, around $1000.

Or use 383 pistons with a 16cc-22cc dish. They are very common. D-shaped dish is preferable because you get a nice flat surface in the quench area. My math says a piston with 18cc dish, Vortec heads, .038" gasket, and .010" deck height gets you 9.4:1 compression.

Then choose a cam that meets your goals for the truck. Of course, a bigger cam needs higher compression to make decent cylinder pressure, whereas a smaller cam is happy with 8.0-9.0:1. All the parts, including gearing and tire height, must complement each other to work well together.

My thoughts exactly. I haven't bought the rotating assembly for my build yet but I'm definitely going to get dished pistons. Surprisingly K-B lists only one piston for a 383 with 5.7" rod, and it's domed. But here are some for 6.0" rod, but none get you into the low 9.x: 1 range. I could swear they used to make a 22 D-dish.

I think you'd be giving up power at all RPM ranges with a stock L31 cam. I'd opt for the #14097395 cam used in the HT383 & RamJet350. I found a brand new take-out for around $140 as I recall, and real GM LS7 roller lifters (12499225) are reasonably priced.

Thanks for the piston info.

I am definitely considering the HT383/ramjet cam, but the specs are not hugely different between it and the L31, seems like.

From what I've read, it seems like the smaller you go on the LSA the more difficult it is to get the TBI to work with it. There's a tuner in my town that is good with older GM injection systems and he's recommending the L31. Plus, I've already got one! But I might still go with the HT383, especially if my CR will be high 9s.
