Question for you out there that have run a 292 in a truck

Do any of you guys on here have any experience with trucks that had a 292 in them? I am considering a 292 for Crusty Biscuit. I know they have a very flat torque curve and from what I've heard are a pretty decent engine.

My second vehicle, and first of many trucks or utility vehicles was a 1970 GMC C1500 Suburban with a 292, 4 spd, 3.73 axle.......i owned it for several years back in the early 80's............A great engine, tons of low end torque, ran really well, never got hot, very smooth.It was Super easy to work on, real happy pulling right at idle speed.

Originally I was leaning towards a 396 for added torque. My Pop mentioned the 292. I have found one about 6 hours from, appears to be complete with all the brackets, for $450. He also mentioned everything you did about it. I've heard they weren't great on fuel economy, but ironically a bigger carburetor is said to improve upon that. I ordered the book for inline sixes. I'm intrigued by these things now.

They definitely like fuel. The original GM 1 barrel leaves a lot to be desired.
I have a throttle body fuel injection fuel injection nearly completed for mine, to go on an Offenhauser intake. I kind of lost interest with everything I have going on.
With so much old stuff around here, I commonly see Chevy 6s for sale here on CL. So many are claimed to be 292s, but the unique position of the fuel pump on the 292 (middle of the block vs. next to the distributor) says otherwise.

I did some reading yesterday on I think Jalopy Journal, can't remember, been reading a lot of different threads from different sites. Anyhow, a guy was having trouble getting his run properly, got all kinds of advice, he hadn't posted in a really long to follow up. His follow up post was about the tweaks he'd done and that he'd taken his panel wagon loaded with tools, passengers, and a motorcycle, from the west coast to the east coast and all over after that, and averaged about 17 mpg's. My final gear will be either 3.54 or 3.34, plus gears between gears so I will be able to keep it a happy rpm. It'll be interesting to see what it gets.

The 292 would be a great motor for the 65. We had a 70 two ton grain truck with a 292 and it was a torque monster. It would be refreshing to see that rather than a big block.

I contacted the guy that had the ad on craigslist. He just took it out of his '66 truck, literally. When I called he was removing it. Right before I got this '65 I had a chance to get a '66 with a 292/sm420/4.57 setup in it. All I had to do was install my disc brake conversion kit, ranger overdrive, and shorten the driveshaft. But ******** Craigslist Tom backed out of the deal while I was figuring out a way to get the truck down here. I was excited to have a truck with the 292, was looking forward to having something different.

Well, 4 something years later, I get to add it to this truck with basically the same drivetrain I would've had in that '66. Funny how things work out...lol...

292s are wonderful engines, my friend bought a 70 C60 grain truck, 292, sm465, 2spd rear, drove it home from the auction 50 miles away. It came from a fairly hilly area. PO told him that they had a Ford grain truck with a y block 292 and both trucks were loaded with hogs, the Chevy made the hill out of town whereas the Ford wouldn't pull the grade.

A 300 Ford might do it though. Those are good engines too. Had a classmate that had a '79 F150 4x4 with a 300 in it, and that truck did some amazing stuff.

I don't think there is a domestic I6 that isn't good, Chevy stove bolts, Chrysler slant six, 62+ GM I6's, Ford 300, International Diamond engines, AMC I6, Hemi-6, Pontiac OHC 6

I don't think there is a domestic I6 that isn't good, Chevy stove bolts, Chrysler slant six, 62+ GM I6's, Ford 300, International Diamond engines, AMC I6, Hemi-6, Pontiac OHC 6

I have to agree. It's pretty hard to fark up an inline six. More main bearings than cylinders makes for a pretty stout bottom end, and everything is straight lines, no angles of the dangles to figure out. Six divides nicely into 360. It's engineering 101.

I swear i'm gonna build a 250 V8 one day!
