Previous owner swapped in a GMT400 spare tire carrier

Just got this truck, didn’t come with a spare but I found a rim for a spare and put tire on it today. Went to put the spare under the truck and to may surprise a previous owner had welded in the GMT400 cable spare setup. Only problem is the little piece at the end of the cable that fits into the inside of the wheel isn’t right for my wheels. It’s stepped to fit tight inside the ID of the wheel but on my wheels the ID is larger. Wondering if there’s a washer or plate or something I can slip over it to secure my spare or if I’m going to have to get something fabbed up.

My apologies sir,you did have a great introduction,I even welcomed you. I thought you were one of the 1/2 dozen 1st posters today that started with asking for help without ever even saying hi. Again sorry for my mistake. As for your dilemma. I don't know of any ready made solution. If you don't find a solution I can see how to make one,wouldn't be as slick as you might like but it would get the job done. You know what a wheel adapter looks like make one,cut it out of steel plate,or aluminum plate ID would be what fits the spare tire wing nut OD would be big enough to drill your bolt pattern. Cut a slit from 1 side all the way to center so you can slide the cable through. Drill your bolt pattern use bolts as your studs facing up tack them to your plate or thread them into the plate. The way it would work is the wing nut would hold up the adapter the bolts/studs would keep the wheel centered,and keep the plate slit from spreading.Put pieces of hose or shrink wrap over the threads,to insure even if there is movement it doesn't chew up the wheel. A slicker option if you have access to a lathe is turn a cone like a wheel balancer cone to slip in there. Imagine a plate like this 1/4 or 3/8 thick without the extra holes and a slit to slide the cable through. Or a cone like this different diamensions of course,again with a slit for the cable.

Easy solution.
Get a steel spare rim that fits. Or mount your shiny matching spare in the bed and show it off. The vast majority of vehicles with aluminum wheels have a steel spare. Because it’s cheaper and it just sits down there for 10-40 years collecting dirt rocks and crud.
Plus strong chance you’re not running this truck cross country day in day out and even if you were, if you destroyed a tire you’d get a new one directly and throw the spare back under the truck.

I put the later model crank up in my old '78, but I did make sure to get the proper unit for truck tires... and also bolted it in.
Depending on your skills, fab up something that will work with your size rim or replace it with the correct unit.

Well, I already have the aluminum rim and tire for a spare, and I’ve got it back there shiny side up to hopefully keep the shiny side from getting messed up. I wonder, did trucks with the N90 cast aluminum wheels come with a matching aluminum rim as a spare or did they come with a steel rally rim back there? Here’s my invoice, the truck came with N90 plus 31s so I’m still running the stock tire size

Someone may have an answer to your question, but
I’d say if you’re that worried about being 100% original down to the spare tire rim then swap out the spare tire carrier for the old original clunky hard to use style.

Someone may have an answer to your question, but
I’d say if you’re that worried about being 100% original down to the spare tire rim then swap out the spare tire carrier for the old original clunky hard to use style.
It’s not that I’m THAT worried about it staying original though I WOULD like to keep it as original as possible with some minor improvements. I’ve already got the 5th aluminum wheel and the crank cable carrier though and am just trying to figure out how to make what I have work or if I do need to change something keep that change as small as possible. Maybe a large washer or ring of some kind, maybe a hubcentric ring, I don’t know. I figured maybe someone else on here had run into this before so I asked. It’s no big deal, I’ll figure it out.

my 90 suburban with those wheels has a steel wheel for the spare that is painted black.

I was just trying to save you money with my previous post. Easy peasy buy a wheel spacer with correct lug pattern correct hub diamension cut a slit to slide the cable through. The winch holds up the wheel spacer,the wheel spacer holds up the spare tire simple 5 minute solution,probably less. Just some cheap examples IDK lug spacing or hub ID on these
Edit, now that I think about it,you wouldnt even have to slit the spacer if it had a gmt400 hub diamension,just slip the hanger through it and crank it up. The hanger would center in the spacer the spacer would locate on the lugs.
