I've found that there are a few people who have had to pull their NP883's out of their truck due to shifter problems and no support from Hurst at all because they claim it's an OEM shifter so they can't give support, but to call GM. GM simply says it's an out of production part so call Hurst. You know, the usual, pass the buck, it's not my problem ********.

So, if anyone has suggestions, help, parts #'s, kit part #'s for rebuilding the current shifters, please post up any input you might have.

One things already figured out for sure, there is a difference in the 2wd NP883 shifter, and the the 4wd NP883 shifters. The 2wd shifter will NOT mount to the 4wd transmission with the integral Transfer Case adapter.

Pic of the 2wd shifter, (top) and the 4wd shifter (bottom) side by side.

The 2wd mounting plate also has an offset that makes the shifter closer to the dash in the truck. The 4wd mounting plate goes straight up.

The 2wd shifter also is not flush on the mounting side, so part of the shifter goes through the large hole in the mounting bracket. The 4wd shifter mounts flush to the mounting plate.

Pic, compliments of @tsailer2.

Here are pics of a 2wd shifter. You can see the forward offset in the mounting bracket. Also see how the shifter housing protrudes through the bracket so the bracket also has an offset step.

More pics from @tsailer2. This is why the 2wd shifter bracket won't fit the 4wd transmission.

Is there anyone with enough fab skills to #1 make an adapter bracket so the 2wd shifter will bolt to the 4wd transmssion, or #2, make a complete new bracket that will incorporate both the 4wd mounting holes with the same 4wd non offset, but yet be able to have the 2wd mounted to it? Just about seems some could cut the 4wd bracket and weld the lower section to the upper section of the 2wd. I'd just hate to cut up 2 brackets to try and it not work out. So we need the Fab Warriors to chime in here. I know of at least 2 dudes here that likely have the skills to make this happen.

HAHA oops Sorry, Can you delete my thread over in trans please?

NO, lets's leave that thread for your NP833 build specifically. We'll do that transmission build there, and keep the shifter issues here. I'll clean this thread up with these posts shortly, after I know you and I are on the same page. I'll edit that other thread to read NP833. That is the transmission model #.

So someone needs to figure out which Hurst Rebuild Kit can be used to rebuild our shifters, and/or which aftermarket shifter we can buy to retrofit our OEM shifter and get a resolution to this problem. Neither GM or Hurst seem to give a rats ass. You call them and they pass the buck to the other back and forth. I see both side of that. Hurst is right, it's OEM GM, so GM should have a resolution, but it's outdated for GM. Hurst built the damn thing, you'd think they could at least talk to us and help us figure out what Aftermarket shifter or rebuild kit will retrofit for us. I have a feeling it will be a Hurst shifter made for a Dodge that will work.

Here's info on the Rebuild program through Hurst. I was told at one time, someone called about one of our shifters and Hurst said NO they won't do it. Clearly on this sheet, they do show a spot for Hurst OEM Shifter for $250. Could be that someone got the wrong person. Might be worth trying again to anyone willing.

And here's the proof that iron case 2wd does exist. These are from a member here, and I forget who he was. Please speak up if you see these are your pics.

Another interesting fact about the 2wd unit, they don't have that one offset mounting bolt like the 4 wd units have. You know the top and bottom left bolts on the bell housing. Those with 4wd units, know what I'm talking about.

Re: NP883 w OEM Hurst Shifter Problems

I have this same trans and same problem.
About to have it rebuilt and figured maybe the trans shop guy might know?
You could never steal my truck, impossible to find any gear unless you have been trying for a long time.
Any info would be awesome

sure made those loose bearings a breeze lol. so here is what I figure I will attempt with the 2wd shifter, Opinions lease. I know the OD rod is too long, but how much of a problem do you think that will be?

All of us A883 guys need to be sticking together on this. I don't have mine installed yet, but when I build my K10, this is what's going in it. Between all of us, we'll get to the bottom of it and get a fix or alternative to this figured out. I have a feeling, we can either #1 rebuild our shifters, or #2 get an aftermarket Hurst shifter new instead of using the OEM shifter. However, I have a feeling it's going to be a Hurst model that fits a Dodge that we can use. And it won't be cheap. I don't really care though. If I have to spend $300 on a brand new Hurst shifter, I'd do it. I also happen to know if it works, it'll be a whole different experience driving the truck with a new shifter. And while be might use a Dodge shifter, we might have to use our OEM rods on the Dodge shifter. So don't lose your rods whatever you do. Just don't throw none of it away.
@tsailer2 will be fabbing up a plate to be able to use a 2wd OEM shifter on the 4wd transmission too. Maybe he will make a template out of cardboard too. Keep it handy incase someone else needs it.

Here's a pic of mine, and I know the shift rods are wrong. I bought it this way. The guy had the shifter off, and just bolted it back on months later not paying attention to how he did it. So don't be using this pic as a guide. It's WRONG.

This is the 4 wheel drive (left) and 2 wheel drive (right) mounting plates.

I see how easy this would be to make that plate. Using the lower section of the 4wd plate and the upper portion of the 2wd plate. I'd get you a piece of cardboard and trace out each, punch the correct holes in both. Then lay one on top of the other and see where a good spot is to make cuts, and join the 2 pieces of cardboard. Tape the 2 peices together, and then you have your template to make one out of flat steel about 3/16in - 1/4in thick.

One of the rods from the other shifter won't fit better???

And that's the way that pattern goes for sure? I know it's funky, but that reverse I think should be at least be up shouldn't it? Reverse is the lowest one right?
