I am rebuilding my NP 440 out of a 83 K1500 And so far have ran into SEVERAL issues. A huge one is the rarity of this transmission.
My first major obstacle is Bearings. The only bearings that seem to still be in existence for this thing are Chinese manufactured. the first set I had I must have not had enough gear oil in my trans and they burned up. QUICK.
You must be registered for see images

So I found a company in Ft Worth that told me they only use the best bearings in their BK130 kits.. little more expensive but I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. received the next day and what do you know, the SAME exact Chinese bearing was in that kit. Screw it I will use it. Ok so I reassembled (if you would Like I also have plenty of pics of that too) the tranny And I get the cover on but I notice a couple of gears wont shift, the ones closest to shifter and reverse (1st and 2nd I think). Turns out the keys in the gear wont release? the spring is keeping tension on them.. YAY.. on top of that I read somewhere that the only difference between the MY6 and MM7 versions, other than 2 and 4 wheel drive are the diameter of shift rods. WRONG!!! Thanks to HotRodPC for the info and clearing a lot of stuff up, and it was his Idea to start this thread.. I just used it to throw my initial rant.. Anyways without further adieu, here is all the info any GMSB member can ever need (hopefully) gathered into one location . a spot dedicated just to the bizarre overdrive transmission

The other difference in these transmissions is, the 2wd unit are aluminum housing, the 4wd units are cast iron. Now, we have a member here, I forget his ID, but we'll get it, who has a 2wd that was also cast iron. So the 2wd can come in either variety.

sure made those loose bearings a breeze lol. so here is what I figure I will attempt with the 2wd shifter, Opinions lease. I know the OD rod is too long, but how much of a problem do you think that will be?

One of the rods from the other shifter won't fit better???

And that's the way that pattern goes for sure? I know it's funky, but that reverse I think should be at least be up shouldn't it? Reverse is the lowest one right?

I found it when I was doing research online. From what I have read Chryslers branch of New Process manufactured the A833 and when GM got a hold of the tranny they didn't want to call it the 833 and let it be known as the 440. I was trying to find the EXACT credible website I found this info. but I am having trouble doing so. will post when I find.

Actually from what little I was able to find on this, Dodge called it an A883/NP440. I have a feeling that was just the Dodge Trans code, kinda like our RPO code of MM7 and MY6. I know Dodge used codes like 442 in the B bodys, and they were NP883's too. I never heard GM not wanting to call it an A883. That would be stupid of them anyway. Kinda like the NV4500. GM uses it and so Dodge, but it's not a GM or Dodge product. It's a New Process product, just like our Transfer Cases are New Process. Also like Ford, Dodge and Chevy using Dana 60 axles. It's an OEM product by an aftermarket company.

I decided to crack mine open and find out why I couldn't get in and out of gear. Reverse was all I could get. The PO was right, he did have the side cover off and didn't get it on right. I'll get that figured out eventually. He also didn't even use the correct bolts to bolt the side cover on.

Other than a little rust and mud inside, the trans looks good. Gear teeth appear good. They synchros don't even look to bad. But, think I'm going to go through it all anyway. New Bearings and Brass throughout.

On ebay there is like 3 different ways to order the kit. You can get gasket and bearings without synchros, Or gasket and bearings with synchros which I'd damn sure replace the synchros if i'm going through a trans since that is the #1 thing that usually wears out and they do take on more wear when the bearings go bad too, so may as well replace them if it's time for bearings. Then there is a complete kit that also includes a new main shaft and bushing. Not sure that shaft is needed unless yours was chewed on for being neglected and ran on for a long time with bad bearings and caused the shaft to wear.

Now do keep in mind, when it comes to that shaft, I've been told they are different for the aluminum case vs the cast iron case. How true, not positive, but I've been told they're different. And it seems I was also told, you can only get the shaft for the cast iron model, not the aluminum model. Don't recall for certain now.

Your's is a cast iron 4x4 model too?

hey just a heads up the rear gasket (where the adapter meets the tranny) will not work!!!! not one single kit sold has the correct size. so far anyways, I have purchased three now. and the snap ring on input bearing also needs to be filed down just a hair. (this is if you are running the kit with the Chinese bearings that I talked about in my build. )
