Hello all! New to the forum here and just wanted to see what everyone thought about my new project. I recently lost my grandfather, who was my best friend, back in October. This was his "beat around " shop/work truck. I've had a lot of great memories riding around our farm and back roads with him in this rig. It's a 1984 K20 Scottsdale LWB with a manual transmission and 350. The truck is in overall good shape and runs great with several mods (1/8" plate bumpers, winch, 35" Buckshots, etc.). I hope to slowly fix the truck up restoring odd and end things such as the interior, exterior, paint and also planning a few motor mods. I hope to bring this truck as close to a original restored rig as possible, while keeping in mind that I actually plan on using it as a hunting rig. This forum seems to be a wealth of knowledge and I look forward to using it in the future. What do you all think?

Sorry for your loss but I am sure your grandpa would be proud you are going to keep the truck on the road and care for it as much as he did.

Welcome and I think its great that you'll get some memories out of the old pickup for your grand dad. :) Those things are important as the years go by.

As for the truck I personally think as long as the body and interior are stock or close too that it doesn't really matter if you upgrade under the hood or axles and the like. After all you want the ol girl to be a capable good working ol truck for you. And nobody sees what's under the hood but you. There is a lot of benefits to aftermarket stuff vs stock, mechanically speaking. As well as upgrading to heavier duty stuff that was offered on other GM trucks.

For instance a 14 FF rear with an NV4500 5spd manual and a 205 or 241 if you want to stay chain drive. And a moderate lift. Offers very good reliability with added performance.

Not to say that your 14 SF is not good enough. They are pretty tuff too.

Thanks for the replies guys. Can anyone give me any references to transmission/motor options that were available on these models. I believe that the original motor is in the truck according to the VIN and options stickers inside the hood (5.7L 350), however I do know that the truck originally came with an auto trans. The steering column has a place where the auto gear selector was located (since removed), and the gauge cluster also shows P,R,N,D,etc... I'm just trying to see exactly what I've got to work with, other than the obvious of a 4sp manual trans. Thanks in advance

Some other general issues that I plan on addressing eventually- It seems that I will need to replace the dash gauge clusters. The only one that seems to register anything is the battery indicator. I plan on attaching a pic of my current gauge cluster following this post. Any info or write ups will be appreciated. Thanks
