Recently picked up an '85 K10 for a project. My intentions are to get it mechanically sound and possibly start body work later. It is a "field find". It had been sitting out in a field for the last 4 years collecting rust, and of course wonderful damp and musty smells in the interior. So far I have changed all of the ignition components, gas tank, front wheel bearings, carburetor and started deleting '85 emissions parts (they are all siezed up and non functional anyway) I literally have a 5 gallon bucket of cracked and rotted vacuum lines, EGR valves etc. There were more vacuum leaks than a Hoover. Carb cleaner and starting fluid were too general to pinpoint the leaks. Pretty much anywhere you sprayed, it increased the engine RPM. I ended up putting a 12" piece of fuel line on a propane torch so I could narrow down *exactly* where each leak was. Worked like a champ. Compression in the 305 ranged from 189 to 192.. Pretty healthy in my opinion. It runs like a Swiss watch now - but the transmission is starting to raise it's hand to say "I'm next". Slipping. I have owned 8 or 9 square bodies in my lifetime, so I already knew what the work list looked like before I even saw the truck. Good project! It is making me younger, and older at the same time. This was the era of vehicle that I worked out of to raise my children. Makes me smile every time I drive it. (well, Except for the tranny slipping between first and second)... I've been snooping around on this forum for a couple of days. Looks like the right place for me to learn something. Thanks for having me.
