Anybody in the New York area reasonably close to Canada have a 14 bolt rearend to sell? I'm interested in a 6 lug but would consider an 8. I know a 6 lug would be a semi float but I'm ok with that. 4:10 gears and a posi or locker would be nice too!!

FYI - the factory locker is a G80, which has a mixed reputation. It will hold up under normal driving when RPM goes up slowly and it engages gradually, but may have been damaged internally if someone spun it to a high RPM quickly and then the lock engaged all at once. Think of high school kids trying to rev it up and peel out on pavement - not good for a G80.

Also, if you want to add an aftermarket locker, all of them I've found have been designed to go into an open carrier.

A proper 14 bolt full floater is going to be an 8 lug. The 6 lug 14 bolt is a semi-float design, and while still stronger than a 10 or 12 bolt, it is not as strong as the FF 14B, not is it as easy to work on. You can look in 2003 up HD 2500 Silverados and they commonly had 14 bolt 8 lug axles with 4.10 and the G80 locker. Likewise if you decide you want to swap to 3.73 it is very easy to find a junk yard setup that can literally be bolted in without having to jack a wheel up off the ground. You search around you can find an open diff and put a mini-spool in it if you are wanting to do some serious four wheeling, and likewise you can keep your g80 and swap the 3.73 on it with very little spacing setup.

If I were to get a FF 14 bolt out of an 2003 and up I'm guessing I would need to relocate the spring perches?

Ok thanks guys. I'll look around at the local wreckers. I like my 6 bolt rally wheels though. Thats sort of why I was interested in a semi float from a 2500. That way its just a bolt in. It would probably be best to just install a FF and be done with it!

6-lug semi-float was only available in the newer style trucks. The 4x4 version is the one you would want, rather than the 2wd version because it's a bit too narrow. You would have to move the spring perches.

It's a great option if you need a decently strong rear axle and want to keep your 6-lug wheels. That was my choice for my '77 K5, as I refuse to get rid of my period correct Hurricane wheels.

FYI, on the newer ones there are some advantages but if you want to go the easiest route and are OK with drum brakes you can get an older one but depending on what it comes out of you may or may not need to cut the brackets and weld new ones o and then go get back to 6 lugs you can find an aluminum 8 to 6 lug adapter plate, but spend money on a good reputable one.

If you can afford to wait and shop for the right axle I would do that but if not know that Barnes 4wd can sell you the 14 bolt axle swap kit which includes the UBolt kit, new shock tabs, spring perches, and then the capture plate for about 135 bucks (shipped to me).

I don't want to get into the process for what to do unless you ask but after that it's not too hard to get the angles tacked up and have the new hardware welded into place per your needs.

Well I found a FF from a 2008 4x4 pickup. Will this rearend be the right width? I might be asking those questions about mounting all the shock and spring mounts in the future:gr_grin:

Should be a little wider than stock, which is good. It gets the track width closer to the front width.

Also going to have disc brakes. Not bad, you will just want to get the right proportioning valve. I can link one later when I get back to my laptop. Got it saved on my amazon Jimmy list, lol. It’s only about 40 bucks.

I think the newer SRW 14 bolts are 62 inches between wheel mounting surfaces. Working off memory and a big dinner so I am all dopey at the moment so my numbers might be fuzzy.

I thought it was in the 67"-69" range. WMS-WMS. Going off memory.

Maybe it was 67. To be honest I’ve been avoiding it for a while because I know it’s going to be way different than the front after I do the 8 lug conversion there, lol. I’ll have a front 10 bolt rebuilder out of the truck and my 14 bolt this weekend and can measure them but from what I have been told is once you do the 8 lug conversion on the front ten bolt it is two inches wider than stock so you still end up needs mg spacers if you want the stance to be square (as far as I’d the tires sit onboard or outboard.

In stock form, the rear track is narrower than the front. The same applies to the 8-lug trucks too. Well, except duallies.
