going to swap out to a 454 on my 1990 1/2 ton suburban with a mild performance upgrade rebuild and just wandering if the 700R4 will be able to handle the power

Better have one built, and I mean built. I had a Monster Transmissions stage 2 HD 700R4 in my 86 K30 CUCV. It had the heaviest duty internal components available for the 700R4. I plowed snow with it and never had a problem. It's your choice, Monster, Mad Dog, they are all pretty much all the same. If you aren't familiar with this transmission, have someone adjust the throttle valve cable. If it's not adjusted properly you can smoke that transmission within a few miles.

Just wanted to warn you. Some people think it's a kick down cable that doesn't need adjustment. You could go with a 4L80 if you want to mess with a stand alone computer and get some geek to make it work. That's an expensive endeavor though.

With a 700 you have to throw every available high performance part at it with a rebuild, along with a big trans cooler. And a temp gauge so you know when to back off.

If the trans works ok now, put a shift kit in, corvette servo, and roll the dice. When it needs overhauled, use a wide band, Raybestos ZPac 3-4 clutch kit, Sonnax smart shell, and find someone who knows what they are doing to build it.

Or, bit the bullet and install a 4L80
