When I took mine apart I found that the rack had cracked and was flexing, and the rod had way too much play for the switch to operate correctly. The rack is made of cheap pot metal and not very durable.
Rack and gear mechanism is cheap to buy, but time consuming to replace because it’s deep in the column parts assembly.
