Ok, so this is really dumb, but I can't get my flip-out ashtray housing back in, and I failed to keep track of how I removed it. It's an 89 V3500. I've been trying it from the front of the dash, and I can't see how I could get it in from behind the dash.

From which side does it install? I'm sure there's somethign pretty obvious I'm missing.

From the front side. The open hole facing out of course. Then it'll just be a tight fit but they do indeed slide right in.

I use the wiggle method as well.

With a BFH it will go in...LOL

Like Mason said, it will go back in with a little patience. IIRC, put the top side in first, and than wiggle and curse a bit, it will go back in.

On my 76 K5. My ashtray goes in from the back. Too wide to install it from the front.

Once figured out, do you use your ashtray?

I bought one of those ashtray cup holders. Like it! My ashtray seemed too wide to install from the front. Tell you the truth, I was able to install it from the front, it wasn't pretty. That's why I feel it would have been a lot easier from the back?

I kinda have this same issue.
I took mine apart and rebuilt and upgraded, but now I can't get the door to shut when the ashtray is in...

There are three nubs on the top of the tray. You need to push past the first one that's alone, it helps lock it in there.

Too few smokers left in America now to remember how to remove, empty and reinstall an ashtray? Lol
