Typical suburban problem. That whole rear crossmember will need to be replaced someday. A lot of the burbs are missing part of that rear body support, it'll be okay for quite a long time. But will continue rotting and rotting around it, requires cutting out a the passenger side quarter panel, jacking the body up, cutting all the rust and spotwelds out and pulling the whole brace out and replace. The spare tire holder area as well as rear wheel well seams are a problem area as well. Soak it with penetrant every now and then till you can get it replaced.

thank you, makes me feel less worried. I will defiantly be trying to kill as much rust as i can and protect it from getting worse. i have encountered the wheel well seams. i ground those down, treated and fiber glassed, primed and painted
