I was given this truck by my uncle a few days ago after helping him on the farm. I remember riding with my grandfather to the stockyard in this truck when I was a kid. I’m 42 now and retired so I have nothing but time on my hands to fix this thing.

‘84 Custom Deluxe with the L6 engine...3 speed on the column. It’s been sitting in the bushes the last 10 years. Body is in great shape but under the hood needs some work. The truck has 76k original miles on it.

Something is going on with the ignition. There have been some wires cut/frayed/chewed and when I turn the key on the fasten seat belt light will come on but will not turn the motor over. I wanted to work on the motor first to make sure it was operable before I went any further so we installed a push button to crank it until I get the wiring figured out. Got the motor running and the throttle kept sticking but got that figured out.

Clutch was stuck for a bit but fixed that.

Looks like it has been de-smogged as there are only a couple of hoses here and there.

Exhaust system is rusted out so I will work on that next so I can hear myself think every time I crank it. It will take some time but I’m enjoying it so far!

I like vehicles with a back story/family history.

Since it is a manual, I wonder if it has a clutch to the floor safety switch that is disconnected or bad.

Mine is an auto, but the other day the plug got pulled off the neutral starter switch and it would not even attempt to turn over.

Figured it out, plugged it back in, and no more problem.

The other thought would be if the ignition switch at the bottom of the column is out of adjustment.

I love it! I also enjoy a backstory. I can't wait to see what happens with it.

42 and retired! I must be doing it all wrong. It looks like you have a good project on your hands and a good story to go with it.

I joined the Army right out of high school and served 22 years. I was medically retired in 2016 due to injuries I received in Afghanistan and I’ve been just catching up on family time, hunting, fishing, and little projects here and there. I’m enjoying life to the fullest!

Pulled the exhaust today...nothing but a pile of rust. 62516FC6-0E90-469E-9308-FE00E0474FBC.jpeg

Went to move the truck to clean up all the little pieces and it wouldn’t move. It appears I wasn’t so lucky with the clutch working after all. Tomorrow’s plans are to pull the tranny and see what’s going on.

I did clean out all the crap from the bed and found it to be it really good shape.

This shadetree mechanic stuff is tough...especially when your shop is your yard under a shade tree. Sure would be nice to have a lift...and a concrete floor...lol.

Cool! You started a new thread on the truck. A couple hiccups but you'll get it. I hear you on not having a shop. It sucks. For me it's at least an hour to get setup and things put away each time as all the tools and parts have to be hauled from the backyard, and vice versa. Truck looks good for sitting for so long.

Don’t have a lift? Make one! I used my tractor to pull the front wheel onto the ramps...then picked up the back to set the rear wheels on blocks. I left the tractor in place in case it decided to roll. It’s not dumb if it works right

Pulled the clutch yesterday and my new one won’t be in until the end of next week. I washed the truck again...I’m amazed how good the body looks after sitting so long.

Got the new clutch put in yesterday. Rats got into the old one and made a nest and I couldn’t get everything out to where it would work properly. Everything works as it should now.

I put on a makeshift exhaust system on it today that I fashioned out of a muffler and some flex pipe I had laying around. It did make it significantly quieter so I could hear more of what’s going on under the hood. Once I get everything going like I want I’ll put a permanent system on it. The motor runs a little rough but not too bad. I’ll tinker with the carb and see what happens.
