since this is a thread already full of computer guys...what do you think of TOR for browsing anonymously? how well does it work overseas? I'm thinking of getting a fresh notebook to use when traveling. I already have a vpn I use when necessary.

I only use a VPN, I tried TOR out and just didn't really dig it, not very convenient.

I tried it for like five minutes, and just didn't care lol. I didn't really dedicate time to it.

It was really slow when I tried it, have also heard that it can now be traced so the benefit of using it is minimal. A VPN tunnel may be your better bet for security but, not much for questionable activity.

I've used Tor in the past, and it worked for what I needed. And true, it's not as anonynous as it used to be. There's no way that an indepth conversation here could cover everything security related. Figure out exactly what you need, and do (lots) of reading up on it. A virtual machine on a USB stick is a good start. Yeah, a VPN too. Learn and use Linux over Windows. (Even with a good updated security program, I still got that "FBI" virus on my Windows computer. It took me a solid week to finally get it off, without losing data.) Sounds like @Jrgunn5150 is a good one for questions too..... I'm gonna have a bunch of ardunio questions for him. That stuff looks cool, but I've never had the time to mess with them... Lol

Yeah, I don't mess with Android, other than to use my phone in the traditional sense, so I'm of no help.

Either that or Intel atom processor, but for now I just stream terrarium from my phone to Kodi.

Kodi is ok but its just a front end for the apps. I just downloaded them directly to my Amazon fire stick, android devices, and am running it through an android emulator on my home theater pc, so any time i want to watch something recently out on blu-ray or some tv stations i just fire up one of those devices on oen of the tv's via the connected device. I also don't use traditional cable, I use directv now, which runs on all those devices and the smart tv's. Life's great with no cable boxes. The apps to install are TerrariumTV and Mobdro but I seldom use mobdro because its usually quicker to download a tv show off a torrent site and then watch it locally. They aren't found in the google play store but you can google them and find the apk's to download and install easily enough.

Also, the android emulator I use is Bluestacks Cloud Connect. It's add based so a bit of a nuisance when you are in the app but if you have it on a 64 bit cpu with at least 4 gb of ram it will run flawlessly.

Seems you guys are talking alot of the nuts and bolts of how those systems work. I just have a simple firestick and run Kodi, and couple others as well as Terrarium and Modro and get everything I need and more. I don't even watch it much but so long as I get Street Outlaws, Walking Dead and Deadliest Catch I'm good. Watching the News in the UK is pretty cool sometimes.
